I saw Bob about a year ago, and he did that Hawaiian medley. He seemed to favour that little round neck Kona which really does have a sweet tone. I am a huge fan of Bob's, however I cannot accept two points in his "history."
Western music arrived in Hawaii via the large numbers of sailing ship crews long before a few Mexican cowboys. Until proven otherwise, I will doubt the Mexicans introduced the guitar.
Secondly, the idea that the Mexicans introduced yodelling and falsetto to Hawaiians because the Austrian Maximillian spent a couple of years in Mexico is not convincing. Max was there with the French Army, not German or Austrian or Swiss. Also, falsetto singing appears throughout the world without Alpine influence.

I was always led to believe that falsetto singing was started by a fellow who always bought his Jockey shorts too tight.  |

I agree that yodeling could not come from the Californios brought to Hawaii in the 1820's. They were long gone by the time Maximillian arrived from Austria. I have been told that falsetto came about with the advent of choirs in Hawaii in the 1800's. Mixed chorus of men and women were kapu, so the missionaries taught Hawaiian men to sing falsetto. Could be, but there may have been a pre-contact tradition for men to sing falsetto. btw, women were not allowed to dance the hula in pre-contact times. - Jack
