Ha!
But the good folks at UPS left me something, today...My BRAND NEW, McKENNA 8-string reso! I can't post photos, or sound files, but trust me--This thing is as loud as your first wife, and as pretty as the woman you left her for!
Right now, we're in G6 tuning, and having a ball. Probably try some more tunings later, but right now, we're ok.
My 6-string is a Guernsey, and I love it. If you've played, or heard, Ivan's guitars, you know what I mean.
But Ivan's not building anymore, so I called Gregg. First impression I got of Gregg McKenna was, hey, this might be the guy...And he is simply one of the nicest people I've ever talked to. He gave me a price that was more than fair--something I have to be watchful of, on a fixed income. Today, though, I reaped the reward of those cheese cracker suppers, recycled cans, platelets sold--And it was worth it!
Now, if you are interested in a great instrument, get in touch with Gregg. And enjoy yourself!

A whole lot, Alan. Gregg used a cream binding, instead of white, and the fretboard is bound, as well. Seeing yours makes me want another one!
What tuning do you use?

Just thought I would drop a note;

Ivan has been going through some health problems over the last few months but is well on his way to recovery. He had a Koa 6 string model about 50% completed in December and I am assuming once he completely recovers he will continue building. I think he is only building 5-6 guitars a year, so if you want one you better get on the list pretty quickly...

The photo is Greg McKenna's. Unfortunately I don't have one of his instruments, although I do have several resonator guitars, one of which is an 8-string, and on that I use A6, just a tone up from what you are using.

Alan, didn't Mike Aldridge use A6 some?

James, thanks for the info on Ivan. He and I talk pretty regularly, so I know about his health. He wasn't keen on building me an 8, so I let it go. He was pretty sick when we last talked...

I agree. I have 2 of Gregg's 8 string resos. One is a tricone. The tricone is what is pictured above.

According to reliable sources, Mike did adopt A6 as his favorite tuning.

I could see that, but I'm used to the G-tuned 6-string, so I'm gonna stay in G6 till i figure it out a little more.

Isn't G6 just A6 down a tone? All the runs still apply. I, for one, don't use many open strings, so in most cases it's just a matter of where the tone bar rests for the main chord.

Absolutely right, Alan. Auldridge also tuned to G9--whatever tuning he used, he owned.

I think you mean C9. G6, C6 and C9 are the three tunings on his instructional DVD.

Edward, you are correct...As far as the DVD is concerned. But privately, I have seen Mikke adjust his Guernsey 8-string to G9. That was many years ago, so don't ask me how he spelled the tuning. He just did, OK?
I will not argue with you, sir. The memory of my friend means too much to me.

I stand corrected. You had information to which I was not privy.
