Playing while standing

Post by Paul Osbty »

I mastered walking and chewing gum. Now to the next project.

Has anyone set up a steel (Shobud s-10 or ?) so that the pedals stay at the floor but the steel is at standing height (strings about 43" from the floor)?

I don't have a pedal steel yet. From pictures it looks like replacing the threaded rods with longer ones would do it.

After seeing Donnie Herron of BR5-49 juggle a lap steel and a fiddle, and Don Warden lug his single 8 Sho-Bud around on the Porter Wagoner show, I got thinking the same thing. It wouldn't cost much to have an extra set of lengthened legs and pedal rods. Using a volume pedal would be impractical, but that's the only minus I can come up with. Hmmm...

cheers,
Drew

What about knee levers? I guess you could rig up some kinda hipshot system.

Extended legs and rods would work but you would lose the use of foot volume I recall Don with his stand-up Sho-Bud on the Porter Wagoner Show back in the 60s Lonnie T

Good. I assumed the rods were simply threaded at both ends. Stock rod can be purchased most anywhere. They can then be threaded at (possibly) the same place.

As for the volume pedal, I had to deal with that in the beginning days with regular guitars. I stand on the pedal when using it. I use a Pan pedal also. From the volume, I go into the Pan pedal. This feeds 2 channels on the mixer. One channel is a basic mix and the 2nd is a stereo chorus. I can "morph" between the two and even in-between for a live dry/wet combination. Standing on both simultaneously gives me plenty of control and I don't fall down. It's different, but I didn't know any better at 15 years old and now I'm used to it!
[This message was edited by Paul Osbty on 09 March 2003 at 10:18 AM.]
