While I was at the Dallas show I got to meet Mark Roeder, he sells some really nice lap steel stands. I bought one of his stands and brought it home with me, and I have several different lap steels so with some minor reconfiguring I got the stand to work with all of the different body styles that I needed. I have both double neck and single neck lap steels, and using one of the brackets from the original double neck stand, which attached with wing nuts I was able to mount all of the guitars on the new stand with only a few minor adjustments.
Here's the stand in its original configuration, showing a Silver Hawaiian.
This is the stand after installing the removable bracket for my original stand, which is adjustable for size.
The stand will now accommodate the double neck, and seems to be very sturdy.
Here is the stand adjusted for a frypan, also fits very nice.
The whole thing comes apart and fits into a nice canvas carrying bag, very portable. Seems to be a great solution to the problem. |

Bob: WHAT do you use underneath the wide body part of these guitars? It looks like some kind of cushion so as not to scratch the finish.
Also, what do you use on the vertical pieces that look like rubber bumpers or something?
Tell us, the owners of old equipment how they might improve their existing stands. |

Ray there is no contact the underside guitar except where the arm pads contact bottom plate. These were the original pads that were on the other stand, they are made of felt wrapped with vinyl. The upright arms are some kind of rubber bumper, or tubing. The original supports on the new stand are lined with cork, I had to build up one side with some rubber strips to match the neck offset for the double neck.

The carry bag is actually made of some industrial strength nylon that Mark uses to make tents.

| Mike, Thanks for reminding me, I forgot he had said that. Both the bag and the stand are first class work! This was his least expensive stand, the better ones have adjustable features Incorporated in them already, just trying to save some money. |

I sure appreciate your taking the time to explain and clearly show how you put together the modification. You're not only a great 'collector';
'designer'; and, 'engineer-builder', not to forget what a generous and sharing person you are but one heck of a fine gentleman as well.
Oh, and for you other readers benefit, Bob's comment regarding 'inexpensive' stand........ should not be misconstrued that Bob is 'cheap'. Actually, he's just very thrifty. |
