this event was so successful i thought i would at least give a huge thanks to the people responsible for it.

This Steel Symposium was part of the University of North Carolina's Southern Folklife Collection (- i dont know if that means the steel guitar is now officially "extinct" enough to be folklore)
Not quite knowing what to expect - i figured 20 people max would show up for the lectures on Hawaiian guitar and the evolution of the steel - but i was wrong, it was a well attended event with John Troutman giving the early history of steel guitar and Tom Miller giving his dissertation on the evolution of the pedal steel for his Ph.D.
OK - now the shows
Chris Scruggs - what can you say.... he is some reincarnated prince of all things golden age of country music. i knew Chris was good from various youtube clips - but I was not prepared for how well he has mastered the steel - from dead on Jerry Byrd to Kayton Roberts, even a wonderful "Emmonesque" version of "I Love You So Much it Hurts", people just couldnt believe it (- this was NOT a steel convention, at least 90% of the audience were just music fans - so i know many had never been exposed to the "straight" steel before - esp at this level). His version of Kayton's "The Waltz You Saved for Me" was imo, the apex - beautiful.
Cindy Cashdollar - along with Tele master Bill Kirchen, they just proceeded to rip the place apart from note 1 - they were like two boxers up there throwing solos back and forth all night - this was a classic Texas roadhouse throwdown from two masters.
i wanted to post this just to point out that the steel guitar CAN hold its own as a headline instrument.

Jerome,
The people you mention are at the very top of their profession, no doubt about that.

Chris is just plain ole, out and out, down and dirty "GOOD"!!!! He has had a life time of exposure to the best Nashville has to offer,,,and he has learned his lesson well. When he plays he exhibits total control and mastery of his guitar,,,,such freedom!!! He's great! Wish he would come to the Texas Jamboree non-pedal sessions. |

Wow,
I'd sure like to have been there too. I checked out his website and I'd had no idea that any of the obviously proactive Scruggses were around. I grew up with the famous Nitty Gritty Dirt Band record "Will the Circle be Unbroken", and my folks and an uncle were into the Louvins and the Monroes...Chris eh? Does he rock the banjo too? On his site I see he is in Boulder Colorado tonight with Michael Nesmith. I have to make an admission now; I was a huge Monkees (RIP Davey Jones) fan in 1966 (my uncle still laughs at me) and I had 'em up there with the Beatles and the Dave Clark 5, Yardbirds (my uncle's favorite and one of mine too) Paul Revere and the Raiders, Tommy James and the Shondells, etc. I custom ordered every Monkees lp from my aunt's (and step-uncle?/cad) tv and radio repair store. I watched their tv shows religiously and I later heard that only one of them played music, that man being Michael Nesmith. Hey Stephen Stills applied and lost the job to Michael so that must say something. Chris Scruggs and Michael Nesmith. Should be a great show!
