My cmputer goes into screensaver mode and I can't get it to start back up without doin a hard reboot by holdin down the power button. Occasionally it will also lock up while surfing the net where the mouse and keyboard won't respond. I'm runnin XP home edition on an older Gateway pentium 4 with 3 GB of memory. |

See if you can find an updated video driver.
Otherwise, read your Event Log to see if there is a listing of the device that failed to wake up from suspend. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools and look for Event Log.
This is a common problem that affects most operating systems at one time or another. It is usually an outdated driver hanging, or a program that wasn't 100% compatible with your OS. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I haven't added any new programs recently. This just started a few days ago. I tried to do a system restore but every date back to a week would not restore. I'll try the video driver and look at the event log. |

I reloaded my mouse and keyboard driver but couldn't find an updated video driver. This is what appeared in the event log last time it locked up with the screensaver doin it's thing and being unable to wake up the computer.

I had a similar problem that was driving me nuts. I have worked on it off and on for last 3 months. Both internet explorer and firefox would run and then "not respond." I would have to use the on off to get out of it. I did a clean install of windows 7, all the win 7 updates. No good. Updated all my drivers. Better. I have an HP laptop. Disabled all of the propritory HP software. It now runs great, hasn't hung up in the last 3 days. Make sure all your windows updates and drivers are installed, then disabel propritary software that isn't needed. Do a clean install as a last resort. I searched and searced the net for fix with no luck. Hope you have an easier fix than I did. _________________ ShoBud Pro 1, 75 Tele, 85 Yamaha SA 2000, Fender Cybertwin, |

7006 - Service with the same name already exists.
7009 - Modem.inf not found.
7000 - Service login failure.
Sounds like some type of communications software issue... |

Aaaaarrrrrggggghhhhh! Wound up reformatting my hard drive and reinstallin Windows XP. The partition with the re install data has been unusable for some time now so I wound up usin a Dell XP disk to re install Windows into my Gateway. Luckily I also had all the Gateway drivers saved on my external hard drive which made it a little easier. The lockin up issue disappeared but other minor issues tell me I've probably got my moneys worth out of this 10 + year old computer. I found a new gateway tower with 4 GB memory and 500 GB hard drive with Windows 8 on it, optical mouse and keyboard at Best Buy for $250, not a bad deal at all. Anybody need a boat anchor? BTW, thanks to all that tried to help. |
