Can anyone give me some info on fender double neck pedal steel i might be buying one looking for info on value and general information

There are basically two completely different ranges of pedal steel from Fender. The originals worked with cables. The more recent ones were made by Sho-Bud and have normal rods. I have examples of both. The older cable models have a warm sound, but the ones made by Sho-Bud have a harsher tone, similar to a Telecaster, and nothing like Sho-Bud's own models.
There are people who swear by cable models. I've had nothing but trouble with them. |

Hi William,
I am nowhere near as knowledgeable as many folks on the forum, but there are a few things you can look for. One of the easiest way to get a rough idea of date is to look at what kind of pedals and pickup the guitar has. The earliest models had stamped chrome pedals (they are flat), sometime in the early 60s (1963?) Fender switched to cast black pedals (they are curved). The earlier models had the jazzmaster square pickup, later models the skinny jaguar style pickup. There are, of course, some transitional models that have a mix match of early/late parts.
I remember reading once that there were actually three styles of chrome pedals, so if it's an early model you might be able to get more precise dating ... |

| A double neck cable job could either be a Model 1000 (a double-eight) or a Model 2000 (double 10). In good shape, and if everything is there, the D8 generally brings $750-$1050, and the D10 brings about $900-$1200. None of these came with knee levers from the factory, so many have been hacked up to add ersatz levers. These are simple, but big and heavy guitars, not well suited to modern setups. They can be fun to play and have their own sound and personality, but I would not recommend them for the average beginner, as it takes a certain mindset to play without levers. (Most beginners want to do all the fancy moves and have all the latest pedals, and they're just not there on these guitars.) |

Michael Yahl is working on (and may have available by now) a drop-in arrangement to add levers without drilling holes in the guitar

We need to start sending Michael emails- I've been waiting over a year now.
I think it would be a good idea to gather up everyone that wants the knee lever kits and approach him so it will be -$$$- worth it to him to make them available....
