So on my new (used of course) Carter Starter I don't seem to have a couple of changes. The C pedal only raises string 5, not string 4, and the LKL is just all messed up; if I push it until I sort of feel a stop string 8 is raised some - maybe a half step- and string 4 isn't affected. If I push a little harder, both strings are raised, probably more than a whole step. It sort of feels like I could keep going until they were at like G# or something! Shocked

Is it relatively straightforward for me to sort of study how everything is connected and make the necessary adjustments, or does it sound like I may have some deeper issues that I need a more experienced player to diagnose and fix?

The first thing i'd try is simply tuning up the raise rods on the 4th E string by turning the nylon hex nuts at the changer clockwise until those pedals and levers start having an effect. Beyond that, you may need to move the pull rods down a hole on the bell crank under the guitar.

Also, be careful on that F lever "stop;" it's very easy to overshoot. It's just a screw that could strip away the end of the F lever (or that could itself be stripped by the lever). Turn over the guitar, and watch as you activate the lever. I have mine turned to an angle that minimizes this, but if you do a forum search, you'll find several other, better solutions to this common problem on a Carter Starter. That, and the long travel on the E lever are two of its biggest drawbacks.

See what you mean about the LKL lever. I think mine is stripped at the top already. I'll replace that little screw at some point with an actual stopping device of some sort.

Thanks for the rod chart Jim. I ended up solving the C pedal thing by moving the rod for the e string up (or down, depending on how you look at it) to the furthest hole on the bell crank and got it tuned up correctly. Very proud of myself! Very Happy
