As written in the article, Natalie Maines has a solo album coming out in May and she doesn't think it's the Dixie Chicks "time" right now.
The last one they did, Taking The Long Way came out in 2006. Though it wasn't nearly as successful as prior CDs, it still went double platinum in the U.S.
From the standpoint of record companies, the new release from Natalie is on Columbia, the label the Chicks were on for their last two records, so I doubt there is any "fear" from a record company as long is it turns a profit.
The whole thing after the The Comment was just blown so out of proportion to the point of absurdity.
I won't go into the whole story because I've told it in the past, but I was able to hang with Lloyd Maines several years ago after a show he did here with Terri Hendrix. We had even had an impromptu dobro jam backstage after the show. It was the first time I'd met him and he has been a favorite musician of mine for decades. As some fellow members here know who are personal friends with Lloyd, I found him to be a heck of a nice guy and a real down-to-earth west Texan.
He was braggin' a bit during the show about his grandchildren, Natalie's kids, and like a gushing over-the-top grandpa (no grandkids for me yet but I fear I'll be no different), he had a photo of them taped to the top of his acoustic guitar.
It sort of put it all in perspective for me.

I like their music too. Lots of steel, fiddle & banjo and great harmonies. Screw Iran or Iraq (which was it Alan?)

I see Natalie has her own website now, and there's a 4+ minute video on there about her upcoming CD. Won't be much in the way of country music but there will be lap steel - it is co-produced by Ben Harper and he makes this comment a little past the three minute mark: "...through her musical instincts, I learned a lot about my instrument...I mean, she's a steel guitar player's daughter."
There's also some stuff on YouTube from live shows she's done with Ben.
One thing though - sorry Natalie - I'll check out the CD - but I'm not diggin' the "punker chick" hair.

I'm with Mike on this one, as a sidebar to many music careers, I was always cognizant of the apparent tolerance shown to artists of all political persuasions. It was as if society knew and accepted flamboyance in dress, demeanor, and opinion from "artistic types", and that their opinion didn't have to be our opinion. I hate to think those days are gone, and artists have to carefully guard their opinion for fear of economic blackmail.
We're just going to mastering here at the studio with a band with several songs with politically and morally assertive lyrics. It's really nice to hear something besides "Why'd ya dump me?".

| Well,this does kinda get into slippery-slope territory,but the Chicks said what they said,using their fame as a bully pulpit in a foreign country,as was their right,just as it was the right of the country music community to vote with their entertainment dollar for artists who either stuck to the music or made socio-political statements more in line with the sentiments of the country music community.Not a thing wrong with being outspoken....CSNY asked if we wouldn't "please come to Chicago" and Merle sang about "when you're runnin' down my country,Hoss". |

Dave, the only Chick who said anything, and it was about a 10 second off-the-cuff comment, was Natalie Maines. The two sisters could have thrown her under the bus, but they didn't.
I thought that was admirable on their part.

Mark,you're right that it was a short statement,but a statement (or an image-think Randy Travis' mug shot)needn't be long to go viral and have consequences the speaker never intended.And some things never go viral....Hank Jr. had a song awhile back called "If The South Would've Won,We'd Have Had It Made" Now you'd think most folks north of Mason-Dixon would be calling for Congressional hearings and a Comprehensive Action Plan,but apparently Ol' Hank still has the pig in the ground and the beer on ice.  |
