...this was acquired as part of a package with an older Fender Twin-Reverb amp...a previous owner provided the catchy artwork and installed the legs (made of water pipe and flanges...)

...pickups/switches need work as it doesn't amplify now...

...original case...

...Bobbe Seymour's staff suggested I bounce this off this forum to see if it has value? / should be restored? / is useful as a player? / or collectable?

I have several other photos if that would help discussion......any thoughts you have would be appreciated...

Just going by this picture, it looks pretty restorable to me. Is it a 7-string/8-string?

I would leave it just like that - seriously. 'cept fix the leg issue.
I enjoy an instruments history & character - for better or worse - that's part of its charm.

That should be a good sounding instrument when it's all fixed up. It will never be as collectible as a pristine example of the same instrument, but it will be a good player's instrument.

I'd agree - leave the enhanced finish as is, but fix up those legs!

...thanks everyone!...I think I'll tear into it and fix the electronics...then look into a new set of legs... thing weighs a ton!...maybe more than my pedal steel...

...its got a 'C' shaped, plastic tortoise shell looking handle on the case that had to be designed by someone who hated steel guitar...

That's a '49 - should have had 3 legs. Looks great - nice score.

$1,000-ish or more for a "normal" one. You might want to look at getting the electronics done back to spec as close as possible, as these had "their" sound. Don Helms was maybe the most famous player, on many of the Hank Williams hits.

It was made that way - as an 8 and 7 string neck. If you count the pole pieces on the pickup of the outer neck, it only has 7 of them as well and you can see the nut has only 7 evenly spaced notches for the strings.

Not sure if that makes it more or less rare. I've seen this in both the double 8 (as used by Don Helms) and 8/7 variations so they definitely made quite a few of them.

Also, the replacing legs with pipes thing seems quite common - I've seen this on at least 3 examples. Not sure why the legs were so prone to getting lost as there was a space for them in the case. My guess is that because the original legs weren't adjustable (Gibson supplied them in 2 lengths), if the player wasn't happy with the height of the instrument, they would have to make their own legs - probably putting the originals away "somewhere safe" to avoid carrying them around.

No idea what it's worth but a lovely 1939 7/8 in great condition was for sale on this forum for $1500 in December last year.

...godfrey daniel!... I never paid any attention to the pickups...just noticed that the headstock had an extra space for a missing tuner...

...thanks everyone for your help with this project... I'll keep you posted as it proceeds...

They also made D-7s. I have a black one, circa '39.
