What to get...should I wait for Texas?

Okay...it's been suggested that i get a 10 string.
I'm not really up for paying 1000.00 for a single neck guitar.
What are your recommendations for getting a steel?
I am going to Texas in a month...should I search the pawn shops there? Would I have more luck and better prices looking in Texas?

If your comming to the TSGA Show There is always plenty to choose from. Don't think you will find very many in the pawn shops.

For a while, at least, I'd play what you have. The old Fenders are great for experimenting with tunings and pedal setups. You can change the whole setup on that guitar in less than 15 minutes. NO other steel on the market today will let you do that! The basic techniques are the same on all pedal steels, and it would probably be better if you follow the progression from 6-string (which you already play), to an 8-string steel, and then to a 10 or 12-string steel. I wouldn't recommend for you to start with a D10 with 8+8...it's just too much to comprehend (for most people, anyway). Learn the basics of right-hand techniques, pedal work, bar manipulation, and volume pedal technique, and then go "whole hog".

There are no short-cuts...you gotta crawl before you can walk.

Sounds like you have two choices:
either a "Carter Starter" or keep practicing on your Fender while saving for a pro level guitar.

If your budget is $1000 you are only a few hundred away from a good used pro guitar.

Do a Forum Search for "Carter Starter".
You might be impressed.

(GFI has a student level guitar also, but I'm not familiar with it)

There are several Carter-Starter Dealers in Washington (one even in Tacoma and also one who just got a shipment of them -- Trading Musician in Seattle). We'd suggest you call ahead to see if they still have them in stock, however.

All that Joey speaks about is Carter,,,thats all I heard from the time he arrived here until the time he left.Carter this Carter that,,like welcome home Carter.

I heard him talking in his sleep and thought

I, and several other forum members have quality used instruments available frequently. I think you will find you will be better served to deal with a fellow forumite than a dealer or manufactuer.

I agree with all the previous posters. Are you coming to the Dallas show? If so, check out as many guitars as you can. There will be a lot of manufacturers with new and possibly some used guitars, some smaller booths with used guitars, and a lot of guys bring used equipment there that you can find out about through word of mouth.

If you can, attend the Texas Steel Guitar convention.

I think the pawn shops would be a waste of time. I don't think you would find one. An internet search would be more likely.

Ebay and this forum are hard to beat for good deals.

You might want to consider trying to buddy up with somebody who knows PGS's inside and out. This is a mechanical device, and could end up being a nightmare if you get one that isn't in good shape and ready to play.

I agree with Mike DeLaney. You should hook up with somebody local who already plays and have them pick something out for you.

Basically your 2 choices are a Carter Starter, which is a great student guitar, or a used pro model. Either way, you want something with at least 3 knee levers. Prefereably 4 or 5. (The Carter Starter has 4)

There are often used MSA S-10s for sale somewhere for under a thousand bucks. A lot of people like these a lot, and you might want to take a look at one.

My advise is to go to the TSGA show and see what's there. You'll get a chance to see all the new instruments, and there are also always a few used ones for sale. Even oif you don't buy anything there, you'll have a much better idea of what's available, plus, you'll have a great time and get to meet a lot other steel players and hear them play.
