If you had listened to him carefully he was about to say "nothing or -4".

You see, I thought if I placed a comma between 'four' and 'minus' that it would only be construed that the -2 was not under the radical sign.

It just goes to show you, that people will construe what they feel they must construe __ and NOTHING will change that.

I must construe, that my dog not only is good at math, but he has an inherent talent for discerning the meaning of my pause in speech, __ denoting that minus two (-2) was not under the radical.

Did I mention that his strong point in grammar is punctuation?

Then your dog should have pointed out that the right punctuation would be:-
I asked him, "What's the square root of four; minus two?" and he said, "NOTHING."

Of course, that would make him grammatically good, but arithmetically wrong, since "nothing" is the square root of "nothing."
He was probably giving it some deep thought, before responding that "nothing" is also the cubed root of "nothing" and also "minus nothing". In fact "nothing" is the only number which is also its own negative.

All this, of course, was going through your dog's head at the time. A very smart dog indeed.

Rick, I am sure that your dog is feeling very misunderstood by your remark here. If you believe that he only barks, but says NOTHING, your dog may be experiencing acute depression and may need further assistance.

Your dog was saying something, not NOTHING; you were just not understanding what he was saying in his barks. It is the same problem that human beings have in communicating. Each believe the other is just barking and saying NOTHING, so there is NOTHING to be heard.

Do you have a better understanding now?

Thanks for all of that, Don __ I think I understand.
Every time I hear barking, he's saying something (most likely giving his political views).
When he says NOTHING, he's being smart.
Politicians could learn a lot from their dogs.

The original poster made what I think is a critical error. He failed to quantify NOTHING. How much nothing can or should one have? The optimist might say, "much to do about nothing, while the pessimist might say, "less to do about nothing'. Here we have two opposing views. Soooo..how much is too much nothing and how much less is enough? I am a bit confused. Chasing the ideas presented here is like herding cats.

I don't think so, Alan. Nothingalcholics Anonymous would be all about addictions to NOTHING, whereas Harold is suffering from real trauma. He needs a trauma support group for the real thing that he is going through over this NOTHING thread.

There would also be a major problem in joining your procrastination workshop, because he would just be prolonging the pain of his trauma. I hope you do not think that I am against your Procrastination workshop. It does have its place and serves a real purpose, but in trauma you do not want to procrastinate on your pain. It is too unbearable!!!

I just want all of you to understand that I am only trying to be helpful!!
