| Contact Jim Burden at bulletbars.com and have him make you one. I just had Jim make three 13/16"diam, 2+15/16" long. One is solid and two have a 5/16" center bore to give the same weight as my old Broz-O-Phonics. Quick service and great bars at a great price. I'm really enjoying them. |

The only 7/8 bars I have in stock now are 3 3/8" long. Sorry, but I don't have anything else at the machine shop right now to have him make up a special order.

| Yes, bjsbars.com will make that size for you. It happens to be the exact size I came up with for my 8 string non-pedal steels. I just checked the BJS site and the 3" long bars are the only short size listed with a SLIGHTLY BULLET SHAPE nose. I don't think they ever advertised custom sizing to your specs, but I asked if they would make me a 7/8" X 2 7/8" bar and Butch Gardner said sure, no problem. Butch is great to work with. That bar fits and feels great in my hand--the quality is absolutely SUPERB!!! You won't be disappointed. |

Another vote for Jim Burden. I just bought another bar from him two weeks ago. Wanted a backup for the one I've been using for the past six years.
The original still looks like new.
He can make most any size you want.
However, he does not make tapered bars.
Great guy, fine products. |

Jim Burden makes great bullet bars- the rounded end is really like a bullet while the Dunlop and Ernie Ball steels are much more blunt (like half of a globe.) He makes his steels to your specifications- diameter, length, center bore or not (which as previously pointed out will affect total weight of the bar.) There are several varieties of stainless steel and he uses one that is very well-suited for steel guitar.
His bars are $40 with free shipping which is dirt cheap for a custom bar custom built to your specifications.

The 13/16" diameter that Jim offers has the maneuverability of a 3/4" Jerry Byrd-style bar and the weight of a 7/8" bar (if you don't have it drilled out). That size is particularly well-suited for lap or console steel- a very good compromise that isn't commonly available.
His bars are so good that they can even play themselves without anyone holding them! 
That indentation on the flat end is like a reversed cone shape. That indentation didn't work well for me with my unorthodox way of holding the bar so I glued in a small piece of cork with epoxy and have been very happy with it.

Umm, no. I wanted one, specifically 1 1/8" tapered to 7/8" and drilled out all hollow to about 6 oz. He's not set up to do tapered. |

Hi Glen:
I used since childhood a tapered nick manolof bar, I just plain wore it out. I liked the tapered bullet nose but as I grew up the bar became way too small for me to use anymore. I liked the thumb indent for easier reverse slants too. I do not have large hands, my index finger is 3", my middle finger is 3 1/4" long. so I'm not certain what size I could grasp and hang on to to do tips, hammerons and pull offs without losing the bar from my grip.
Are you making tapered bars then?

I still use a tapered SS bar I got from Eddie Alkire when I was taking lessons in the '60s. I have not had my machine shop make any tapered bars, but with his CNC lathe, I'm sure he could. LIke everyone else, I need enough customers to make it worthwhile to make a dozen bars.

I bet that Jay Seibert could make a tapered stoneware bar but people have been unable to contact him on orders for the past few months. (He has had health problems in the past so I hope he has been doing okay.) That would be a very special special order but if there was enough interest in a tapered bar he might want to give it a shot. Or not.
