Has the finger grooves like a Lap Dawg, but has a fully rounded nose like a Shubb/Pearse?
There was another thread that mentioned the "Long Dawg", but the nose didn't look like it was fully rounded.
Rocky Mountain slides make the "Ouray Astro Dog Tone Bar" that has the shape I'm after (and I have one), but it is ceramic. I'm looking for steel or some type of metal (with more precision on the slide surface).

I found a Shubb-Pearse SP-1 at my local GC... they don't show on the website, perhaps they've quit carrying them.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Both of those bars are similar in shape, but what I'm looking for is where the bullet point extends beyond the grooved hand grip.
The Astro dog does this but is ceramic (and not a precise edge; like the metal bars have (the astro is excellent for Cooder-type slide IMO).
I play with a lot of slants and the full-round bullet nose is essential for the 3 string combos.

You can get apiece of steel 1/2 round and a piece of oak and make your own. I used a drimell tool to make the finger groves , then I polished the steel with 220 sandpaper. I finished the steel with 1000 sandpaper. last I used super glue to atached the steel to the wood. I used lacquer to put a finnish on the wood only.The last thing that I need to was to round each end so I could slide the bar on the strings and be able to go from 1 string and another.
 Works great! and was fun to make. You can make it whatever length you want. |

I have "improved" a Shubb-Pearce SP-1 occasionally by slitting a section of black rubber fuel line and sliding it over the somewhat meager handle, but yeah, I like the Peter Funk Daddy-O shape a lot. I can't remember how I managed to trick the website into telling me the price, but I do remember needing a shift in comparative national currencies... 
Of course, I've been playing with these babies for a few months now:
You can ONLY play two strings at a time maximum, and I don't think they'd be much use on a six-string with wide vintage string spacing. But the more strings, and the closer together they are, the merrier. On a nice closed-voicing tuning like C6th with slants all over, the slants become single-note arpeggios entwining in W and Z and L shapes shooting off all over the place. Maybe I should look for trades.... |
