i built a nice cabinet for a shobud single 12 restoration, well i go to put the endplates on it this evening and the wood has shrunk and the endplates are very loose now. has anyone else ran into a problem like this? i built the cabinet and left it sitting on my table for about 3 weeks. it wasn't finished or anything. any hints would be appreciated alot. should i have laquered the cabinet immediately ?

Jeff, the question is HOW loose?
When you spray on a coat of primer and 6 coats of lacquer - that's 8 mil of finish (8/1000")
That just might do the trick. If you used kiln dried wood there wasn't much moisture to suck out to start with and I predict it can't have shrunk all that much.
I would give the spray lacquer a chance

Before you built the body, the wood should have been dried to a relative humidity/moisture content lower than the area where the instrument will be used and stored. The body sat on the table where it was drier than the shop, and shrank.

| I suspect that the relative humidity is very low in your shop......very common problem in cold climate areas this time of year. RH can easily swing to 20% and lower....45% - 50% would be ideal. There's lots of reading on this subject out on the net if you are interested. |

bent id say about 1/8 inch play if i put the endplate right against the front apron the back apron has 1/8 inch between the endplate and apron

three weeks?
try three years. i would trust it then. i have wood that i have had for 30+ years. its still moving around.
1/8th of an inch in three weeks is not right....thats WAY too much. |

I agree, Bill, that's way to much for just moisture movement.
Jeff you might have to make yourself a new cabinet if it's as much as 1/8"
Edit: Would it work if you cut yourself some 1/16" veneer and glue one piece to each apron?

i was thinking the same thing about building a new cabinet. when i built it the endplates were snug . i guess i'll build me a new one
