...I think that's what they call it...old shows they play on WSM after the Opry...I was listening on the way home from the gig last nite and the steel playing was so good it was terrifying...that feeling you get when you hear somebody play and you know there's NO WAY you will ever be able to play like that(happens to me all the time)...

George Morgan was the host of this show, and Marion Worth and Justin Tubb were the guests...the steel playing was magnificent...Hal Rugg...he had his second string trip together already and was wearing it out!

He was brilliant.

...and the Opry boxes in those years had no reverb coming back and the Ryman only had small monitors suspended in the air over the musician's heads. And still Hal brings it.

"Opry Echoes" every Saturday night following the Grand Ole Opry:

I really enjoy hearing those old shows. The steel is usually just amazing coming from Pete drake and Hal Rugg and the many other great players. The main reason I listen is to hear the steel.

Not to take away from the superpickers of today such as Paul and Tommy, those were THE kings. Obviously, Buddy Emmons and Jimmy Day led the way, but the Opry staff musicians in those days set the bar high and gave us all those great licks live and on sessions that we strive to emulate.
