I have been away from Pedal Steel for several years for reasons of finance...but I had the opportunity to get another steel. My 2003 Black Carter D10 has come back home. As I have not had a steel in a while...I don't have a "steel" amp. I do play bass, and use a GK MB200 for my bass head. I also have two Ashdown 210 cabinets. They are the pro line made in the UK models with a tweeter that can be dialed in or out. I am using a EHX holy grail reverb and a boss dd3 from my guitar rig and I am getting very good tone from this setup. It is very balanced and has nice mids.

Has anyone else tried this kind of setup? I was think of finding a used 15 to build an open backed cab to use with the mb200 but I have to say I am liking the sound from the Ashdown cab.

Yes, I'm getting a great sound with a GK 115 combo bass amp. Only weighs about 30lbs. too. I use a tiny bit of wet reverb.

A 2x10 cab might sound great. I use a 1x12 detuned cab which is equivalent to a 2x12 closed cab with great success for lap and pedal steel. Just building a 1x10 detuned which will be equivalent to a 2x10 in sonic appearance.

People are too much affixed to what everybody else uses.

I would nevertheless switch off the tweeter. Steel guitar lives from a mellow tone.

have fun,

I have never really played through 10 inch speakers but have used 12 inch for decades when everyone else was using 15's and always had a great sound. Give it a try and my guess is that you may be very surprised. BTW, I was just looking at some 2x10 enclosures on Craigslist wondering what they would be like.

I'm thinking it'll sound great. Before my first steel amp, I borrowed my dad's fliptop Ampeg B15-N. Although it had no mid control, I got a sweet tone, but missed the reverb (and stomp boxen for that were unknown in 81-82)
