Nice clip! Made me wonder about how many steelers there were in the UK at that time, not too many I guess. Basil Hanrigues (sp.), Ken Byng, Roger ?

I do wish that the BBC hadn't wiped all those 'Top Of The Pops' tapes! We did the show in March 1974 as 'Compass' with our single, 'No More Whiskey'.

Billy Bremner, Brian Hodgson, Pete Kircher and me - dressed up as 'John Bull' and playing mostly my Telecaster but playing a simple phrase at the end of the bridge on my then-new ZB...

I've never seen it! We were gigging when it was broadcast and there were no vcrs in those days.

Thanks for finding that, Dave.
Played that album - particularly that song - to death back in the '70s. Still have a nice copy.

Might have posted previously, but here's Gordon Huntley playing live - not the finest audio or visual - with Matthews Southern Comfort. Played their vinyl bare back when.

Just to set the record straight; I believe that was Jay Dee Maness that recorded Misty with Ray Stevens, way back and I believe that Jay Dee might have given Ray the idea to record Misty. If I'm wrong then someone please correct me. If there is a you tube of this gentleman playing "Misty" with Ray, I'd sure like to listen.

S'funny -I always assumed it was Weldon Myrick that played on Misty with Ray Stevens? I suppose I could be wrong after all these years of singing his praises
for such a mind blowing solo and backup!

I believe that you can go to JayDeeManess.com, look for "Get Inside with Jay Dee and buy the tab for "Misty" and others.

Are the last five posts on topic :?: :!: I thought it was about Gordon Huntley. Why did it suddenly turn into discussing "Misty"?

I believe in one of the "pop-ups" it sez that he played "Misty" with Ray Stevens in 1975, and I'd like to listen to it if it exists. Thank you.

I was there with a new Fender 1000 in the early 70's and I think Jeff Newman was there before me...

Nice link Daniel. I remember seeing some footage of that show where Gordon pops a string in the middle of a great cozmic extended steel solo. In fact here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=malDzOSl1pQ

I too am confused on how JayDee and Misty wound up in this thread. Am I missing something? :?

BTW, what brand of steel is Gordon playing in the concert footage?

OH, the pop up on the video!

It says he played Misty with Ray on the same TV show, not the recording.

Dave, it appears that the nameplate on Gordon's steel is Rose-Morris, which may be this company:

Rose-Morris
I have some old British music magazines from '67 called "Beat Instrumental", they had ads from this company.
Back then they were located at 32-34 Gordon House Road, London, N.W.5.
I guess it's just their sticker and not the brand itself. Maybe Roger R. sees this and comments.

Gordon Huntly on the ZB

I believe That was a Denley Pedal steel also used on the "Woodstock" record. Of course I could be wrong...
My wife says I'm always wrong

I know I did own a Denly at one time, reputedly owned by Gordon & then by Ronnie Bennet. It was still red when Ron had it but was birdseye maple mica by the time Ronnie had rebuilt it and passed it to me.

Rose Morris also had a large musical everything distribution setup in Australia. They did not actually make any of the products that I know of.

I'm not sure about the Rose-Morris connection; if they marketed a UK-made steel it was before my time playing PSG. Perhaps Ken Byng knows?

As far as the pop-up is concerned it is possible that Ray Stevens mimed to his record on Top Of The Pops and Gordon was called to 'mime' on steel.

At that time there was a compamy producing cover versions of chart hits in long-player form and the series was called 'Top Of The Pops' (no relation to the TV show). In 1975 I got the call to go in and duplicate JayDee's solo on the track. Given the brilliance of the original, anyone who has been unfortunate enough to hear my efforts with George Harrison on 'The Pirate Song' (done around the same time and only months after I'd first sat at a steel) will have an idea what a travesty my contribution must have been! I recall that I managed to scrape through with my heart in my mouth the whole time

I happen to have the LP (vinyl, of course) here in my closet along with numerous other crimes against music on which I colluded. Fortunately I lack the means, and the incentive, to listen to it again almost forty years later.

If the clip was filmed before Gordon got his first ZB then it's a Denley...
