type of steel used in plain strings

Does anyone know of string mfgs. using something other than plain steel music wire for thier string? I thought I read somewhere about an alloy or stainless for the plain strings and inner core (not the Cobras')

Jerry Barberine, now deceased, used to be connected with a string company that used "Sweedish steel" for their plain strings and cores. At the same time he was also affiliated with GHS strings. We became very good friends and he sent me several sets and lots of singles of that brand. This was a long time ago and I can't be sure of the brand name. Maybe DeAquisto or something simular. I'm pretty sure it was a New York based company. They for sure were damned good strings.
Also, I seem to remember that the Martin string company had some "silvered steel strings" marketed at one time and I liked those a lot too.

Thanks Bobby, it may have been Rayline strings that Doug Beumier mentioned in a Steel guitar World article. I'll have to check. The jazz players use Dr Thomastik, I may try to get singles from Harry Hess to try em out. I think GhS, Ernie Ball, or others have there plain strings silvered. I usually use GHS and they turn black real quick like silver does. The only pics that won't turn my fingers black are the old Nationals w/ pat.##

I sure wish I could remember. It wasn't D'Aderio (sp?), but it was D' something I'm pretty sure.
I don't recall that the Martin silvered strings turned black at all.

It may well have been the D'Angelico's. Check to see if they are out of New York City or Huntington Station or one of those places on Long Island. Maybe Jody Carver would know.

Just checked the Rayline site. It was his strings that were mentioned in the Steel Guitar World article by Danny Hullien. They have a stainless and nickel plain and core. Anybody else have tried these?

John Vinci of "Vinci" strings manufactured a
great string.He has made strings for me and others including EB.D'Addario. His string machines were made by himself and he had great strings.

John has since sold out to a small operation
somewhere in Wisconsin to a man by the name of Chuck Faas. Chuck purchased Randall amps from Don Randall back in 1988. He then bought out Vinci Strings which were manufactured in Lindenhurst L.I.NY.

The last I heard is that Fass sold Randall to Washburn and is now doing the Vinci strings.

Vinci did strings for John D. as they were friends for years.The name Vinci is not well
known,but his quality by far surpassed most
string manufacturers..

He also did strings for Jimmy D'Aquisto before Jimmy went over to Fender. Jimmy passed away a few years ago at age 42 I beleive.

I will find out if the Vinci strings are still being manufactured,,but if Jimmy aint there,then they are not the real deal.

They only say Vinci when Vinci says they say
Vinci.

I bought 50 sets for E9th and 50 sets for C6
about 8 years ago. I'll find out who reps them. They asked me to rep them,,,but the commision was not too good.

I'll check around..and post anything I can find out. I like them better than all the rest,however there may have been a change in manufaturing procedures,I know that all the strings I have are re-inforced at the ball end and are silk wrapped as well.
