extra pedal for Mooney lick ?

I have understood that Ralph will leave his volume pedal and hit a foot pedal with his right foot while playing rides like "Rainey Day Woman" Any one know anything about this and how to rig it with an E 9th tuning ? thanks.

Add a pedal or knee lever that lowers your G#'s a half-step.

You only need to lower your high G# to G as that's all that Ralph does. Also an important change is to pull your 4th string E to F# by itself and not bring up the B to C#. The G# and B need to ring right along with the E to F#. Also, Ralph raises his G#'s to A on split pedals, one on each side of his B to C# pedal. You could put an E to F# on a pedal next to your volume pedal which would work just fine. And maybe lower the high G# to G on a knee lever which lowered the 6th string G# to F#. I personally have it on pedal one which also raises my 7th string to F# to G# as Tom Brumley does......Have a good 'un...JH

Bill,

I'm in love with my 4th string E-F# raise. I stuck it on Left Knee Vertical.

I call it my "West Coast" lever cuz I got it to copy some JayDee Maness licks, but it has a Mooney-esque quality too.

I later found out that JayDee doesn't even use this change!

I still dig it, though!

I´ve got to add something here. On "Rainy Day Woman", Mooney does use the G# to G (pedal)to get the "7th" licks and on the live version (Waylon Live) he also does one of his little "trademark" licks with it. Pick high G# string (string 3 on standard E9, string 1 on Mooney´s tuning) with B pedal pressed. Release B pedal. Engage G# to G lower before picking. Pick string and bring it back to G. There are several variations on this. Now, some might not want to add the G# to G lower - it usually takes a LOT of travel and more often than not, you don´t have another knee lever available to put it on. The same move can be done if you either: raise your 1st string (if you have standard E9)F# to G and pull with your left hand behind the bar (like I do) or, if you have a whole step raise on the first string -preferably with a half stop so you can go to G first and then up to G#.
But the change that´s absolutely crucial for Mooney stuff, like Jerry and Greg said, is the single (4th string) E to F#. I just couldn´t do without it, I use it for a bunch of other things too and discover something new with it all the time. It can really do things that are simply impossible if you have just the C pedal.
Greg: It is my guess that Jay Dee uses the 7th string (F# to G#) raise in a lot of his typical licks instead.
