This is how I spent my Saturday night, since I'm not gigging. This song has been nagging at me for a few days and I wanted to give it a shot.
This ain't your grandfather's waltz, or even your father's! I wasn't sure how I was going to handle all the pretty, haunting chords that Herbie Hancock plays, so my choice was to keep the voicings sparse. A lot of minMaj7 chords (minor chords with a major 7th in them). This song is on Wayne's classic, and one of the greatest jazz records ever made, Speak No Evil. He is one my greatest musical heroes.
I used my Clinesmith (tuned D C A G E C# A F), Sano amp, volume pedal (poorly), Kay upright bass, and some acoustic drum loops. Again, I'm really preferring to play in this trio format.
This one is still pretty raw. I hope to have it together some time in this lifetime.

Maybe a chorus of improv in a few days.
For the curious--here's the original recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLdCV5t5tb8 _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Thanks, Jeff. I don't figure this one is going on anyone's playlist, but to each his own.
Here are the changes:
It looks way more complicated than it sounds, doesn't it? It took me a little while to find the best voices to pair with the melody in order to portray the chords correctly. I pretty much had the bass notes covered since my bass playing is mostly just the roots. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Very cool and interesting, Mike. Is the high D string used for passing tones or chords, or both? |

I used the D on top to get the min11 chords, especially since the 11 is in the melody.
I've experimented with this tuning for almost as long as I've been playing C6, which is 3 or 4 years now. Again, if you want to get the most from C6 (without using pedals), you've got to get creative with your variations of the tuning and your bar work (and in this case, behind the bar work--there is a string pull at 1:35). _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Awesome, Mike. So, D string and string pulls: I wonder if you'll go to pedals one day. (I hope not!) |
