The Everly Brothers with Emmons

I knew The Big E was playing in the Everly Bros band. Early 90’s their tour led them to Eindhoven. My steelbuddy Klaas Schipper and I rushed to that town only to find out that the show was canceled, one of the brothers was “unable” to perform. We heard that the band stayed at their hotel in Amsterdam, so we rushed back to our hometown and checked the most likely hotel. There was Buddy with a few bandmembers hanging out in the hotelbar. We asked if we could join him and talk steel, sure he said and we forgot all aboud the three hour drive for nothing. I always thought I could see the show later, but no way. Holland was fed up with the Everly’s

I searched youtube many times, for a glimpse of the Big E at their show, tonight with success.

For as long as I have known and admired Buddy, it has always amazed me how he fits into any musical situation, be it a four piece hillbilly honky tonk band to a full orchastra and anything in between including a solo act of just himself,,,just about any style of music that you (him) can imagine and seemingly know the perfect thing to play or not to play.
Just absolutely amazing!
However, after having the opertunity to watch him in his music room several times, his pure attention to the musical task at hand, his uncanny ability to adapt styles and interpretations, his perfect execution that "fits" the tune,,,I have no doubt whatsoever that because of his dedication to perfection is why he is above most of us and is well deserved of being called the best damned steel guitar player there is, was and maybe ever be .

Bobby, I can certainly agree with your post about Buddy Emmons. Altho, there are many great Steel Players...many of whom are there in Texas, Buddy Emmons will forever be the Benchmark of Steel Guitar Excellence IMHO.

I was at that great concert which also featured Chuck Berry Jerry Lee Lewis Bo Diddly Mary Wilson
I learnt to play guitar to these guy's music from the early sixties and it was great to see them in person the steel caught my attention as the phrasing and tone was IMHO perfect

I've been a devoted Everlys fan since the very beginning of their rise to fame and, although there was steel guitar on many of their sessions, it's not a sound that one readily associates with them.

Then came Buddy Emmons! Once Don had made him a big part of the road band in the '80s I felt that he integrated himself so perfectly into the arrangements that it would have seemed as though a vital part was missing nhad he not been there.

Surely BE is the consummate sideman!
