Americana Music Awards- Who is the steeler?

Post by Kevin Hatton »

Great job by the utility guy playing steel on the 2012 Americana Music Awards. Played a blond S10 Sho-Bud. Anyone know who he is? Played nice Tele and banjo also.

That's Larry Campbell - He lives in Woodstock, played with Bob Dylan for quite a while and was then Levon Helm's right-hand man for many years; he produced the last two fantastic albums Levon did, Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt and led the band on the gigs in Woodstock and on the road. Larry's also a good fiddle player and a very nice guy.

I've heard him play with Bob Dylan about ten years ago, he played mostly guitar, a few songs on steel too, and to my surprise it was loud in the mix.
He also plays on a record by german singer Marius Müller Westernhagen.
Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube.

Chain of coincidences... I happened to see Robbie Robertson interviewed on the excellent PBS American Masters biography of David Geffen last week, and that made me want to hear Richard Shindell's cover of The Band's "Acadian Driftwood." Listening, I noticed again Larry Campbell's sweet understated pedal steel playing on the song, then I happened to read this topic.

I couldn't find the song online so I put a copy up on Picosong:

Campbell and Shindell both deserve more attention than they get IMHO.
