Hi
Over the last few years I've seen articals on the history of Vox insturments. I have never seen the Fuzz device(not a pedal) that they made in 64-65. I know they made them, I had one. Also Spencer Kirkpatrick, then with the Atlanta Vibrations and later with Hydra who had four albums in the mid to late 70's.
Spencer got his from a Vox rep at the Atl nama show before they were for sale to the public. He had some pull because his band had won the Vox battle of the bands in Atl. I got mine at the old Rhythm City in buckhead.
They were aprox 5"x1.5"x3/4", a silver color rectangle and had a male output on the end and a input with a on off switch. You pluged you guitar cord into it pluged it into the amp and truned it on. It gave a good fuzz sound for that 60's sound(Stones-Yardbirds). When you didn't want fuzz you had to unpluge it.
It stoped working and I tossed it in late 60' early 70's.
Has anyone else ever had or seen one?

I had one (early 70s) but I think it was made by Electro-Harmonics. It could have been a Vox. I can picture the box but not the logo. The input was male, it has a slide switch for on/off and had one mini knob for effect level. You plugged your cord in the other end.
It worked ok with my SG but would not fit a Strat or Tele. Might have actually been made by EH. I remember it being smaller than your Vox unit, about the size of a pack of smokes. _________________ On man....let the smoke out of another one. |

I did not have a self contained unit, but back in the early "70's I had a Vox Super Beatle with a built in fuzz. Man, that thing just nailed Harrison's fuzz sound on the Pepper and White albums. Speaking of Harrison, I think he was the most under rated guitarist in history. When he played slide you just new it was him |

I played through one of those in my teenage years about 66-67. It belonged to a bandmate, but I remember it well. I remember it looking pretty much like the treble booster only it was a fuzztone. |

When I read your post I remembered seeing this in an old Guitar Player Mag. that I still had lying around. The article says this one is from the late 60's. This magazine was a March 2001 issue. I've never seen one in person, but I dig the "toe twist" control. I wonder how long the pot lasted in those things? _________________ Emmons Push Pull, BMI, Session 400, Home of the Slimcaster Tele. |

Dennis - I had one of those in 67. It used to cut out when I used it in my tele. I finally threw it across the stage in aggravation. When it worked it sounded pretty cool. I read somewhere that Duane Allman had one about that time, too.
It might be fun to see a schematic somewhere. |
