Way to go, John!

Haven't seen the release on Sweat Lodge Guru yet, but this one on Bathetic is something I need to get (actually just pre-ordered it).

I was beginning to fear this thread had hit its "best before date", but rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated, to paraphrase Mark Twain.

Shameless plug: my band's tune, with visuals.

Got my copy in the mail today, a great record. Fantastic stuff John.

Despite the poor sound I thought I'd share the final two songs from my bands first show last week. I play steel on the first track. My dear friend Chris Hoss plays guitar and sings. I wrote both of the songs, I'm pretty proud of that fact, the steel playing I have a lot of room for improvement.

Good work, Justin!

I have been playing some non trad steel guitar around Lewisburg, WV mostly Be Bop Jazz tunes and have discoverd an interesting fact. Since Steel Guitar has waned as an iconic sound in Country music coupled with the fact that few people have actually seen the instrument, the stereotype of it being a country music instrument has all but vanished. It's like it has inadvertantly been placed in a position for rebirth. How cool!

Just came across this video. Can't say I'm a big fan of the song or the style. Though it's an instrument combo I'd love to work with.

Glenn Taylor

Post by Chris Tweed »

I just came across a very interesting and entertaining steel player called Glenn Taylor who plays in a range of styles, but mainly jazz fusion.

I came across him as a session player on a Ginger Baker CD ("Coward of the County" -- no not the Kenny Rogers song), which I revived after seeing Ginger perform last weekend -- that's another story.

Since 'discovering' Glenn I have bought a CD by County Road X he plays on and I think it's great. Pretty wacky stuff with cello and pedal steel. Most definitely not country (which I also like). The CD is on CDBaby and you can preview the tracks on there.

Buzzy Linhart got a little well known for writing "Friends" for Bette Middler and playing vibes on Jimmi Hendrix's "Drifting". An outtake from his "Music" album, early seventies.

Anybody know (or claim to be) the steel player with Japancakes (assuming it's all the same person from album to album; to my ear, it is)?

That'd be John Neff, who also plays with the Drive-By Truckers. Yes, he's on the Forum.

This branches a little past "steel music" but I'll do it anyways, because "Elemental Journey" from Sonny Landreth goes way beyond even his usual high standards as the most innovative slide guitarist on the planet. It's an instrumental album but the arrangements and backing do a great job of supporting and leading the voicing of his slide guitar around - it's as far from the fast-song-slow-song-boogie-song formula as can be. On several songs there's a string trio arranged by Sam Broussard that mesh with the guitar parts. It reminds me the most of "Bow by Blow" from Jeff Beck, not in the song styles but in the impossibility of finding any filler or tracks to skip.

There's very little on the disk that couldn't be played by a good pedal steel player - but the point is, he's playing melodies, not licks. His own melodies.
