WTB very basic pedal steel setup

Post by Andrew Moore »

Admired the pedal steel guitar for years, don't know how to play, but looking to buy a "starter" set to try it out, probably single-neck and set up for "Nashville" (E9?) sound - don't want to spend a lot in case it ends up going nowhere. Total amateur and I plan to keep it that way. At this point my interest is playing for myself alongside a backing track, headphones-only a plus so I don't annoy the family or embarrass myself ;) So what do I need for a minimum? Pickups? Amps? Volume pedals? etc.? I'm ignorant... Suggestions welcome, and if you have something for sale, I'd like to hear about it. Don't want junk, but certainly no need for high end at this point either. Located in southern Maine. Can PSG be played "by ear" like some people can play the piano? Or do you really need to learn the technical stuff? I played piano fairly well for years "by ear" but can't sight-read worth anything... hope that won't be a problem for the steel :)

Andrew, if you care to drive about 185 miles to Shelburne Falls MA you could see firsthand the BenRom steels that I build. I'll send you a PM with the owners contact info. Good luck in your search!
