I saw Paul and Mike playing this kind of music at St. Louis at the end of Sunday nites' gig in '76. Buddy and Jimmy Day were standing by the stage watching, listening. |

I'm not sure where this would be genre-wise, but great playing, and more than worth a listen at the least. I know I might get flamed for this but in my opinion, this is great evidence that the PSG is not just a "country" instrument. The world of music is wide open to the PSG, but those stepping outside of "traditional" PSG are few (my humble opinion only).
But, comparatively to other instruments, we're still young yet, there is still hope. |

Great stuff! From a great era when a few gifted, free thinking and far sighted players were trying hard to push our instrument in new directions. I'm afraid their efforts met with limited success, and resistance even from other steel players (possibly origin of the phrase, "That ain't country"?). Thanks to all concerned for the postings. |

These tunes need better names than "Track 01", "Track 02", etc. That ain't country. |

Around that time (I'm going to say more like '76) there was a steel show hosted by Sho-Bud, (I'm guessing about the hosting Paul, don't beat me up, okay?) an all day event with Jack Boles M.C.-ing at what used to be the Ramada Inn on Trinity Lane, Nshvl. MANY were there, Buddy Emmons, Doug Jernigan, Jeff Newman, Zane Beck, Weldon Myrick, I "think" even Scotty & Randy Beavers was there, others I can't remember, & of course Paul & Mike. Just a few years ago I happened to see Doug at Bobbe's shop & he remembered this show well which he said something to the effect that there was some "serious getting with it" going on, & indeed there was.
All this to say that I remember that the set Mike & Paul played was mostly those tracks if not all of them. Needless to say they were so hot that they burned a big hole in the stage, & Uall can figure out the rest of that. Thing is I didn't realize that they were more/less promoting "United Steels", so it was that much bigger of an impact, to me anyway.
I also recall that Mike & Paul were very generous to give Ben & Randy solos. And that spun my beanie.
One amusing tidbit was noticing Jack Boles giving Paul "sass" for tuning his Sho-Bud too much before their set.
I had an enjoyable conversation with Mike. I'll always be a Mike Smith fan because of the time he took to talk to me then. I remember him telling me about experimenting with Darco strings at that time.
Thankew, Russ!

Tight, bright and fun. What a rhythm section to play with! Mike and Paul are two players who really stretch the boundaries of what can be achieved on steel guitar.
Funky, jazzy, bluesy, you can't really put a label on it. Just wonderful. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator.
