It is not very difficult to work that issue out. It is to protect the buyer. Have the seller give Paypal a call to find out what he needs to have happen to release the funds. I was on a month payment cycle because of an eBay screw up for a while. Customer service was easy to deal with and quite helpful.
A six day waiting period is the same as waiting for a check to clear.
It can be confusing and frustrating to learn how to deal with this stuff but with a little research and patience it can be done.

Might it have something to do with the fact that this is involves international exchange? I've been using Paypal for well over ten years and have never once had a delay of any type in any transaction. This is the only thing I can think of...
Been at this damn thing for a few years now. Not so sure that I'm getting anywhere but it is fun. Sometimes.

If the buyer doesn't have a bank account or a credit card associated with his PayPal account they use the echeck method, which does take longer.

I started using email money transfers for private ( non-commercial ) transactions. If your banking institution offers the service it would work fine for sending a payment in a transaction between two individuals. If you already use online banking just check to see if your bank is set up for it. The way it works is you log on to your banking site and send a pre-authorized payment amount to an email address provided by the recipient. They claim it using a password and deposit the payment directly into their own bank account. That's it. It's instantaneous in my experience. Also safe and pretty inexpensive at a couple of bucks per transaction. It might be more complicated if the transaction is international. I would never use Paypal if email money transfer is possible instead.

Brendan, the good news is that, so long as you made a vendor transaction with Paypal (not a personal transfer of funds) then you have 45 days in which you can raise issues (item never received, received damaged, etc). This freezes the money, and begins a resolution process. It should not be used heedlessly, but is there to protect the buyers, who must commit money without any other true guarantee of receiving their items.
I have been very happy doing transactions (buying and selling) via Paypal. I note that I use a Paypal digital key to access my account: this costs $5, but is pretty fool-proof assurance you funds are safe.
I live in the Philippines. When I deposit a US check from my US bank account in my local bank, it takes a month for that check to clear. The funds disappear from my NC account within 24 hours. Go figure. 6 days for an international transaction, while still a bit silly in this modern, digital world, is not too bad.
I hope you get the instrument without further hassles, and plays like a dream!

Pedal steel, lap steel, resonator, blues harp - why suck at just one instrument when you can do so on many?

my experience
I try not to use PayPal but have used it a lot and Cal is correct - It depends how the account is set up by the buyer.
3 to 6 days is normal and the sell usually can not tell till after the fact.
Intuet - Go Payment works well with Credit Cards and there are others - free to set up & free device you know immediately if it clears.

When you get your buns burned
All I can sat is wait until Pay Pal burns your buns then you will understand just how treacherous they really are.
When you open an account you give them the RIGHT to take money from your account ANYTIME they like ANYTIME!.
And selling something wait until you sell a steel for a cpl three grand to someone and they complain for ANY REASON you get your steel back maybe in one or could be 2 or 3 pieces...maybe someone needed a knee lever or 2.. Oh hell you won't miss that now will you??? you get it back if your lucky then good old pay pal decides in the favor (as they ALWAYS do) of the person filing ANY complaint...Pay Pal WILL removed the money from your account ask it was done to me it has been done to others. I got back my Gibson RB250 neck broken tone ring switched good old pay pal Let EVERYONE sing their Praises!.

Hi Brendan,
sorry I haven't got to meet you yet; may have some time over the summer.
What guitar did you buy and when does it arrive?

Pay Pal
No my beef is that someone BROKE my banjo then gets their money back, One man had his account EMPTIED by Pay Pal crooks...Oh but gee just a Glitch but it took him nearly a WEEK to get his funds put in his account anyone like their account emptied a week?.
I have talked to several people on Flea Bay that have had items stolen then Pay Pal refund the money so the person gets back nothing for their item. As I said wait till you get burned you will join the ones that have!. I wouldn't trust those crooks with a DIME!.
LEGALIZED THIEVES!.
