1950's Les Paul Junior-SOLD

Post by Geoff Brown »

Hi all,

Selling this 50's LP Jr. The serial number didn't survive the refins. For that reason, I took this guitar to Gruhn's to have George do an appraisal. That written appraisal will be provided with the guitar.

Ok…here's the skinny:

This guitar was made by Gibson sometime between 1954 and mid-1958 (later models had the double-cutaway). Body and neck are Honduras Mahogany. Fretboard is Brazilian rosewood. Pearloid dot markers are intact.

None of the hardware or electronics is original (pickup, pots, tuners, bridge, etc). The frets appear to be original, or replacements from that period.

There are two hairline cracks in the headstock, which run vertically through each of the 3-on-a-plate tuners. They were repaired when I bought the guitar several years ago. They are stable and there have been no issues with these. There are no other breaks or repairs.

FWIW, I have the truss rod cover. It is partially broken at the screw hole nearest the nut.

The case has a couple of broken latches and fits the guitar nicely.

This guitar has little value in terms of collectability, but it would be a nice restoration candidate for someone who wanted to get into some old wood without having to spend several thousand dollars, or who simply wanted a player-grade vintage Les Paul to use as-is. The P-90 pickup in the guitar is a Seymour Duncan Antiquity. I'm selling this old-timer for $1500. That's nearly half the cost of a new one from the Gibson Custom Shop. The neck on this guitar is to die for. I've owned many newer Gibsons, and it's a shame they can't get the necks (among other things) like this on their re-issues.

I would prefer a sale locally here in Nashville. I would be willing to ship to a buyer in the CONUS, but buyer will need to cover shipping costs. Feel free to email me with any questions. Thanks for looking :)

Hi

Probably up to mid 56 when Gibson moved the pickup farther from the bridge.

That would be my guess, Remi. But I've seen the pickups closer to the bridge on some later single-cuts as well, so it's hard to know for sure. In any case, there are no leaning studs on this one, so that's good.
