I waited a long time before deciding to give my input on this post. Believe me, I'm not trying to blow my own horn, so to speak; it's just that I would like to share with you how blessed I have been in my musical career.
This was in the 60s and much of the 70s.
I had the great honor to be playing for several reknown artists. I start with:

Liz and Casey Andrson, one show, steel guitar;
Shot Jackson and Donna Darlene, one show, bass;
Bob Gallion and Patti Powell and Gus Thomas from
Jamboree USA in Wheeling ,WV;
Dick Curless on quite a few one night gigs, guitar when Dick was alone, and bass when his guitar player Sleepy Willis was there;
Dave Dudley, guitar on two gigs. On the first gig when we took a break, he asked the club owner to let the band step down, and just give him the guitar player. Wow! On the second gig, he asked the owner to just give him the guitar player; no bass or drums. Man, I thought I was in guitar picker's heaven. I really felt blessed, fully knowing that I was nothing special, just another picker. I was thinking that maybe due to my practicing for a few weeks to get down the "shotgun guitar style" he used on his records. I guess it paid off.

Now, I just play and sing Gospel songs, returning my talent to the God who gave it to me. According to the Word of God, that's my duty.
Anyway, I'm now an old geezer at this point of my life. But, I still hang on my dear bride of 61 years. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Praise God!

Artists I forgot to mention!

Post by Bill L. Wilson »

As the guitar player, for the Oklahoma Opry, in the early 80's, I backed up, The Wilburn Bros., Johnny Russell, and Tommy Collins. And as the guitar player in The McCain Brothers Band, we opened shows for, Mel Tillis, Oak Ridge Boys, George Jones, John Anderson, Bellamy Bros., Eddy Raven, and John Conlee. Those days were a blast, but I enjoy playing steel and guitar now, for 50bucks and free cokes. Thought about taking a job, driving a tour bus for an up and coming young singer here in Okla.,but then, I wouldn't be able to play my Emmons! I do have my priorities.

This was back when I had my own band. Now I have a house gig and when I'm finished for the night, I just turn off my stuff and go home. Easier on the old bones. I did enjoy the big stages and lights though.

Joe Nichols and Carrie Underwood are the biggest name stars I have backed and those are the most recent. Others I have backed were Marvin McCollough, Marvin Rainwater, Bobby Lord, Billy Walker, one show with Hank Thompson and very recently a couple dates with Terry Smith who is frequently on the "Midwest Country" RFD TV show. I played about 3 years with Carol Hicks who wrote "Dusty Roads" that was a #1 Gospel hit. Carol's brother is Wayne Kemp who wrote "Love Bug", I'll Leave This World Loving You", One Piece At A Time" and many other hits. I currently play with their brother, lead guitar player Tommy Kemp in three different bands, two opry style shows and a Gospel Group, "One Way Flight". I played about 3 years with Bill Mounce and "The Outlaws" making bluegrass festivals. The bass player in that band was Tim Crouch who now plays fiddle with Mike Snider and bass player Dennis Crouch who is now with "The Time Jumpers". I also played about 10 years with Jenee Keener on the "Little O' Oprey" and introduced her to the steel guitar community. I have been most fortunate to play with some great musicians.
