Post by stingray »

Has anyone have any help for getting a clean slide from 5th fret to say slide down to open fret slide, without a lot buzz or rattle?

Gary, I assume you're doing it slowly, as you wouldn't notice buzz or rattle if you did it fast. I guess you're muting the strings in normal fashion (behind the bar), right?

What I do on a slow closed-to-open chord change is to increase pressure slightly while going down (to compensate for the differing string heights). Then, if you're going to pick or strum the open chord (which I would recommend anyway), lift the bar just before it contacts the rollers (the nut), and then do (play) the open chord.

Works for me!

What kind of guitar are you playing and attempting this on?
The BIGSBY nut allowed Speedy West to do this without any problem. The old Rick Bakelites likewise make it possible.
I seem to recall that my Fender triple-8 had a metal nut that extended UP above the string height and one would hit it any time such a slide would be attempted.
I have no problems with my OLD Emmons P/P.

You might try gauged rollers. That keeps all of the strings at the same height. This will allow you to slide right off the end of the guitar smoothly.
