I always wondered about this change. My Sho~Bud came with (I call it the "G" lever) change set to change the F# to a G (natural).
Being a ham-fisted brand new player, I was always picking the 7th string when not desired, so I decided to crank the G lever so it brought the F# all the way up to G# so I could at least make the lever bring string 7 up to something better.
After a couple of months my grip technique got better and I wasn't accidentally hitting the 7th string so much, so I reset the "G" lever back to a G natural.
I haven't learned to incorporate it into my playing much yet, but the old hands on here have said it's one of the basic changes so I would be better off to learn to deal with it.
Do some people have it with a half-stop at the G and then bring it all the way up? Or the F# to G# on a separate lever?

Michael, actually this song (or the steel part in it) is an example of how to use the lever on the 1st string without pedals.
I had no use for the F# to G change: I mostly used it in combination with the A & B pedals which gave me a seventh chord, noe if I want that I rather slide the bar one fret higher on the first string. I only have the F# to G# change on the 1st and not on the 7th string, becaus there I like to use it for a seventh.
Thanks Bobby, I wasn't 100 percent sure.

It's G# to F#,but Buddy Emmons had it on a pedal...seems like it was on pedal 8...I could be wrong about which pedal it was,but I do remember that it was a pedal...
...maybe I could say"pedal"a couple of more times...

yeah...this was 'way' before paul's f#-g# change...buddy was constantly experimenting.
i'm still not bothering with any franklin pedal issues, so far. hopefully i'll die first and won't have to learn something new.

| Sorry!I wrote E to F#,but I meant G# to F#...I edited my post above to reflect this...Seems like Buddy said he took it off because the pedal felt funny...in addition,maybe he said it was pedal 4 and not 8...sorry for the confusion! |

| The F# to G# showed up about 40 yrs ago ,,,both Dick Miller and Terry Bethel had it in Vegas ,,,they also had the B's down to A on another pedal ... Ah Steve did you say "pedal"? |

| I had the good luck to find a used basketweave D10 P/P cuttail somewhere around 1979 or '80. It had 6 knees and 10 pedals. It had the 1st string F# to G# change on pedal 10. It was a little stiff though....I was pretty new, didn't really understand how to take take advantage of it and never used it much if at all. Wish I knew then what I know now. On second thought....wish I'd never sold it. |

Steve, what you said is interesting, but does this really work here? As I understand you, with the "G# to F# pedal" it is moving down a whole tone. But in this case it's definitley going up. But I certainly believe what you said, maybe Buddy had already let it go on this recording.
