Gary Hogue's Mullen/Dobro Sound

Post by autry andress »

Gary had a D-10 Mullen with 2 pick ups on each neck. The E-9th neck also had the dobro sound. He did not use the match-bro attachment, as it was all coming from that pick up & I'm pretty sure it wasn't the Zumm
pick up attachment. Does any one have more on this pick up???
Thanks

Quite honestly, I don't know anything about Gary's setup,but you can get a pretty good simulator sound with just a 7-band graphic EQ. Also,the George-L Pentad pickup has an "out-of-phase" setting (fifth position)which can be used with or without a graphic EQ to simulate a Dobro sound. We used to use pill bottles,broom handles and all sorts of things to get that sound. Happy hunting!

Wayne;

If you use the graphic eq method, could you post your settings?

Thanks.

Gary used a Profex II with the Dobro voicings that were created by our Product Developement Manager, Rick Bos and myself. Using the Goodrich Matchbro, my Emmons LaGrande II and my personal Dobro resonator guitar, we tweaked and adjusted the controls on the Profex II until we both agreed that the A/B comparison was about as close as we could get it.

Enjoy!

Repy to AJM from_____: AJ, I currently use a Digitek RP2000 to get the simulator sound and other effects. I haven't used the graphic EQ for years,but basically the trick is in the mids and highs. Depending on which brand of EQ you use, this can vary a little. Push the 800-1K and 5-7K sliders all the way to the top, with others in the middle position,and adjust from there. No matter which brand of EQ you use,the settings will vary with the steel and pickup you are using.
I may go hook my old Arion EQ up to my Zum and get back to you with something more specific. On the RP2000,the trick is in the Amp Modeling and EQ. Start with an Acoustic Amp model,then go into the EQ and tweak the mids and presence. Have fun!

As I remember...Gary and I were the first to
go the double pickup route. Gary first! With a flip of a switch...it threw the pickups out of phase to get the dobro sound. Then came the Goodrich Match-Bro...then the Pro-Fex settings that Mike talked about. They were all great ideas. Thanks, Junior.

Mike Brown:

How about posting the ProFex II settings for the Dobro sound that you developed?

Never mind if that violates some agreement that you had with Gary.

Thanks,
