Form, Fit, and Function of BARS

Post by ed packard »

RJ...thanks for the nice words and observations.

To all...What do you want in a BAR?

Feel and Fit:
This covers Weight, Shape, and Size.
These are the users’ choice.
The BAR should fit the hand.

Hard, Smooth, and Abrasion Resistant:
This covers wear, and abuse tolerance.

Hardness is tested by measuring the depth of penetration of a given shape (diamond, sphere, etc.) under a given force. In metals, this will cause a dent…softer = deeper.

Scratch resistance is measured in a similar manner = a shaped point dragged along the surface at a given force…think string wear and/or bar wear = surface change with time.

Joseph Meditz has provided a table of material characteristics for some BAR materials.

http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopi ... light=bars

Check back…we will show comparative Smoothness data later.

Smoothness and hardness of tone bars

Post by ed packard »

Happy Thanksgiving to all the ZIRC bar owners, and to those that do not have one yet.

Image

Smooth is good, and the Zirc is smoother. Compare the next two photos..first is the best chrome on steel brand...second is the ZIRC. These are surface smoothness shots of the two bars.

Image

Image

Smoothness is good...if it lasts. To make it last, the bar material must be hard and scratch resistant (abrasion resistant). The steel bar can be turned without a diamond wheel...the ZIRC needs a diamond tool...you judge re abrasion resistance.

Ordering info above.

Happy BIRD day...Ed & Vinh

Happy Thanksgiving to you too Ed and Vinh.

The zirc bar is in a class by itself. For me it is the ultimate bar and the only one I use, usually the white one of my salt and pepper set :) Also, for those who care about such things, metal pickup, or galling, is not an issue with a zirc bar.

Re: Zirc Bar - Black -

Post by Billy Woo »

Hi there

Is it possible to order a bar for my 12 string guitar more in line with 7/8 X 3 9/16 ?
I already have a white Zirc bar but I use that with my Emmons 10 string but I also have a Zumsteel U-12 and could use a longer bar?

Please advise,

ZIRC BAR sizes

Post by ed packard »

Hey Billy,

The only sizes available will be those in the list on the opening post of this thread. The total left is about 80 pcs, in two colors, and two sizes in each color. This comes down to 20 pcs in each category if we divide it up equally.

Soon, someone ordering a specific size and color will be disappointed.

Re other sizes...each size and color required an outlay of about $10,000 each plus stocking, shipping, record keeping etc. hence the sizes were limited by the economics, and the market size for other sizes.

When the present stock is gone, we will do no more. Any takers?

Billy...happy that you like the bar...sorry if a satisfactory size for you 12 string/hand size is not available.

Other color/sizes in the list above are still available, but available quantity is falling.
