From a steel player with over 60 years of dance hall, radio, stage, and television playing experience playing both lap steel and pedal steel guitar might I be so bold to ask:
WHY are you playing between the frets instead of directly over the frets like most all knowledgeable steel players strive to do?
Just curious......... |

Ray, Troy is not using a bullet bar. He is not playing between the frets (although I suppose someone who assumed it was a bullet bar might think so), and anyone with an ear can tell how well this guy plays. If you are going to be publicly rude to a new forum member who is also a well known and respected dobro player and teacher it would be a good idea to make sure you know what the heck you are talking about first. |

Thanks Bob!! I really appreciate that!!
Hey Ray, I watched the video to look for what you're seeing. I think I can explain what's going on in the video. First of all, the angle in which the camera is pointing towards the fingerboard creates somewhat of an "Optical Illusion". Secondly, the way I naturally hold the bar creates another "Optical Illusion". Although the center of the bar looks as if it is between the fret, I'm actually playing with the bottom right side of the bar, because of the way my wrist naturally turns while holding the bar. If you could see a really old bar of mine you could see where I wore out the bottom right side of it, not the middle of it.
Anyway, with all that being said, to my ear, I'm playing as in tune as I possibly can. I know I don't have 60 years of experience, but I guarantee that anything that I put up is the absolute best I can play at this point in my career without doing upwards of 100 takes.

nice playing. your video clearly demonstrates your technique. your bar is square. I can see that the leading edge is sharp and that you are leaning into the fret. your intonation and tone are really pleasing.
I play in open E on one of my lap steels. I am gonna try out your note patterns.thanks.
I find that everyone on this forum have big hearts and mean well without mean-ness. I bet there is misunderstanding of intent going on. |

Nice blues licks, Troy. Even with my eyes closed, I can tell the open strings are in relative tune with the barred frets...so optical illusion or not, nice lesson, thank you. _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

Having re=read my post, I can see nowhere that I criticized the man's character, his knowledge or playing ability or his fine history in the music business. His web page and camera work along with his explanations are excellent.
I simply asked a QUESTION! Is that now off limits? |

Ray.....since you asked, I will tell you.....
Your question was not simple.....and it was basically an accusation......
WHY are you playing between the frets instead of directly over the frets like most all knowledgeable steel players strive to do?
There are a few "rough" spots in your "inquiry".....first off, the use of BOLD underlined text is deemed as harsh......especially with the "WHY" being in upper case letters which in nettiquete, denotes yelling....
second.....even though it's posed as a question, you are, for all intents and purposes, accusing him of playing between the frets.....
third.......by stating that he was playing between the frets and stating that most knowledgeable players strive to play directly over the frets, you are separating him from the knowledgeable people which infers that Troy is not knowledgeable......
Here's a polite way in which the question could have been posed.....
" Hi Troy, welcome to the Steel Guitar Forum. While viewing your video it appeared to me that your bar position could have possibly been in between the frets and not directly over them. Was that an optical illusion or perhaps my eyesight being a bit off? |

Anyone with ears could hear that he's playing in tune. Obviously Jerry Byrd wouldn't do it that way. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

THANKS Howard......... I now clearly see the errors of my way.
I never insinuated the man was out of tune and no correlation was made between his expertise and that of JERRY BYRD. |

Very nice tips Howard.. things we should all remember and keep in mind. Without facial expressions or tone of voice, you can only hear what you read.. Makes it really important to follow those simple, yet important, guidelines.. |

First of all, you preface your judgemental questioning with a reiteration of your extensive experience, which in itself is boastful, irrelevant, and unnecessary. Then you insinuate that Troy is not knowledgeable because he is somehow not striving for something you think he should be striving for? How exactly are you contributing to this thread, Ray? Like many of your other posts and threads, you're condescending and judgemental. Simple as that. If you are so legendary, how come you don't have the professionalism to knock off the underhanded snipes? Most pros around here are above that, and if you really had any kind of enduring legacy you'd display much more class than you do. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

If I may make a suggestion here........
Let's not escalate this......the point has been made and further discussion will not accomplish anything other than to possibly get this thread closed.....
This is Troy's thread and we are taking attention away from the purpose of it......which is Troy's excellent instructional videos.....it's not fair to him and I would be disappointed if he were to leave or not post here anymore...... |

It's all good fellas! No hard feelings. I'm always looking to improve and get better, and there's much more that I don't know than what I do know. So I welcome constructive criticism.
