I checked the Cube 80XL with my lapsteel at a local music shop. It was easy to dial in a nice clean and full tone.
Then I plugged in a 6-string guitar and tone was also very nice. But then I noticed the low picking dynamics. It's hardly possible to emphasize some notes in a melody line or to shoot in some loud chords. It's all limited to the same level.
IMHO this amp is better for steel guitar where you control volume with a pedal then for 6-string guitar. |

I use the Black Face Twin setting for my Strat, and it does great in a small to medium size venue. Effects are built in as well! _________________ Justice The Judge SD-10, 2007

I played with a group last week and the tele picker was using the 80 bass model and it sounded really good. I was quite surprised and thought it may be a better choice than the 80xl, wishing I had time to try it. Either way, they're packed with features and purty great sound for the dollar.

one thing I've noticed about my Rolands... they sound *extremely cheesey* through headphones. It appears to be the non-loading of the final amps... my xl40 sounds fairly cheesey through the main speaker at low volumes unless I push the 'power squeezer' button... evidently someone at Roland figured this out too, hence the presence of the button. My Mobile Cube doesn't have this button, but at 4watts you nearly always crank it anyway. I'll try the xl40 into headphones with the power sqeezer and get back to y'all. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

Mike..you have the clean JC-120 settings or switch to the modulations section...I think there's 10 modulations on there. There will definitely be something to suit your 6 string. Yesterday was the first time I took 2 Cube 80XL's with me. It's a Jam session and can get pretty loud, it's not just County...sometimes 8 players including Sax players, Keyboards etc etc..and of course loud lead players. I was in Heaven yesterday...great tone and tons of volume when I took my "Rides" ... In the picture I'm on the floor...the stage is quite small, just enough room for a drum kit and a Bass player and his amp....all the rest set up off stage at the front. My ideal was to have both Cubes next to each other, but room was cramped so just set one on the stand. I always mic up rather than line out...it's my preference, plus I can tap the mic to know it's on...can't trust the guy on the desk with a line out

Hi Bill can you explain more?? my Cube is as quiet as a mouse when the volume at the amp is high....no hiss or anything like that. From my Steel I go into a Boss RT 20...then into a Boss Graphic, tuned to get a Dobro sound when needed, then into my ordinary "pot" pedal, it's an old ZB custom with one in and two outs to drive both Cubes.
Thanks,

I think that's the effect he's talking about... a noise gate actually turns off the signal when the input signal is quiet. You should be able to hear the gate kick in when letting a sound die out... eventually it will chop off at the low threshold (set at the factory). When one is set up wrong the effect is annoying, messing with your low-volume dynamics.
I just tried to hear this with my Roland Mobile Cube and couldn't detect it... I also have an XL40 but haven't played with it lately.
Roland certainly does put a lot of stuff in their amps... not all of it adjustable by the end user. I wouldn't be surprised to find a noise gate function in there. There is certainly compression... a noise gate is like a compressor in that an input controls the output. Most compressors have this kind of function built-in, since taken to extreme (zero signal in) you would have maximum amplification (= lots of hiss).
One way to minimize the NG kicking in would be to run your pre signal hotter... crank the guitar/rack/boxes/whatever up and crank the amp down. If you run in the reverse mode (or use the volume pedal at mostly low range) you might detect a noise gate more easily. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

I do believe there is a noise gate built in to the amp. I noticed that shortly after I bought mine. In a real quiet room, with the amp on a stand next to me, I can hear an ever-so-slight hint of a hiss when using the delay. As the note decays, I can hear that noise gate kick in. It is very subtle. _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande

Mike, in my original thread a few pages back under the heading "A new toy I got today" About 36 guys in the States bought a Cube 80XL....I think there were only 2 negative reports. The rest love theirs. I'm sure you will be one of the affirmatives. Let us know the results and what channel you decide on for 6 string. The "black face" is used by the majority of steel players. Should be good for 6 string too as it emulates the tone of the Twin Reverb very admirably.

Hi Mike...for steel it's a close call for JC-120 or Black face, which I love. if you use the black face, keep the gain low...I use mine at 9 o/clock and use the volume to whatever the gig needs. You'd be hard pressed to go past 12 o/clock..it's a "LOUD" amp for it's modest 80 watts. You can always tweak up the gain for more volume should you need too. Most players go for the "plate" reverb at 3 o/clock. You will notice that the tone controls are "very" sensitive. a tiny turn on any will alter your tone, so just experiment till you find your sweet spot. Good luck

thanks micky i will have to do a lot of experimenting for sure i dont need a whole lot of volume my 112 is plenty loud enough my 1000 is too much amp for what i do.i mostly want this amp for tele because of the built in effects but if it suits me for steel i will use it for double duty. thanks again. _________________ Mike Bowles |

So, comparing the 40XL to the 80XL, is it just a difference of power and speaker size? In other words, the 40XL has the exact same effects and ultimately, tone as the 80XL? |

John....the Cube 40XL has a 10 inch speaker and half the wattage. That doesn't mean the XL80 is twice as loud, it just means it's "LOUDER" Sometimes people get the misconception that a 200 watt amp is twice as loud as a 100 watt amp...it just means it's louder. There's more that goes into the equation. Speaker sensitivity is one.A better sensitivity speaker will deliver more volume that a higher wattage amp with a less sensitive speaker. I'm not too sure about the effects on the Cube 40...on my friend's Cube 60..you can have delay "OR" reverb...you have to choose. On the Cube 80XL you can have both at the same time. The looper on the 80 is longer than the 40. That's something I'd never use, but it's there for those who want it. I'm not sure if there is a presence control on the 40, but there is one on the 80XL. All in all there's lots on the XL80...hope I've helped.

Micky,
You have helped, thanks for the reply...I think I'll probably pick up an 80XL, there's one barely used on Craigslist here for a decent price.
Also, I wanna make sure I've got enough watts for gigging, otherwise I'm just adding to that "amp collection" that another poster referred to!

John...don't forget to let us know what you think of it. You'll probably get a second one like some of us...me included ....one thing assured...it's "LOUD" ... and light

I bought a Cube 60 when they came out and still use it. It serves me well for small venues and it's a good practice amp. I also have a XL80, I've had it well over a year and use it with a 15" external speaker. Both are good but the 80 has a few more extras that the 60 doesn't have. I don't think they make the 60 any more, I believe they make a 40 instead.
For the money, I've never had a better amp. I'd sell my NV 400 but there just isn't the market for them anymore unless a person gives them away.

George....you're right about the market. I tried selling my Nashville 400 in split cabs, plus a Neo magnet on the B/W ... but no takers, so I might as well keep it. I've sold too many things in the past only to regret it later. There is a trend these days for alot of guys who want to go lighter. The Cube 80XL ticks all the boxes. Lighter "PLUS" all the great features. Thank you Roland ...you've made alot of guys happy.
