adjustable half stop on P/P

Post by Gary Walker »

Who sells these parts for the Emmons? Emmons website does not list these parts, thanks, Gary.

The folks at Emmons do have a half tone tuner but, unfortunately it will not fit a P/P. The shaft on the swivel is just a little to short, so you can't get the spring clip on. Also, the hole where the rod goes through is for a smaller diameter rod. I'd check with Cass, Seymour or Bryan Adams.

Gary,
I need a little more information from you and perhaps I can help you.
Which string/s are you wanting a half stop for and what will this string be doing as far as lowers and/or raises.
Example: 2'nd string, E-9, lowering a half and then another half as in D# to D to C#.
Also, what other changes may be on the lever?
Example: lowering 2'nd string, E-9 as above along with lowering 9'th string, E-9 1/2 tone or any other changes that may be on that particular lever.

Yes, Bobby, it is the 2nd string double drop. It also raises the 7th a half. It also raises the 3rd on the C6 a half to C#. I would love to add the half drop on the 9th on the E9 to C#. This is on Tommy's "Hot Licks" video P/P that I acquired, thanks, Gary<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Gary Walker on 26 September 2002 at 10:15 AM.]</p></FONT>

Gary,
If you don't raise your second string, you will find that the way an Emmons push-pull is designed means that it has an inherent 1/2 stop built into each changer finger.
Simply have spring tension hold the RAISE finger at the top of its stroke. Push it down 1/2 a tone and set it so that the LOWER segment of the finger comes in then.Push a further 1/2 tone and set the endstop to control the travel of the LOWER finger.

I forgot to mention that the push-rod from the cross shaft goes THROUGH the LOWER finger segment and makes contact with the RAISE finger segment. There is no collar on this push-rod.

Well Gary,
I think it's gonna be "decision" time for you.
Some of those changes may have to go. Especially the 7'th string 1/2 raise if you want the 9'th string to lower 1/2. I just don't think the 7'th string 1/2 raise would be very compatible with lowering 2 and 9.
Why don't you email me your present copedent and let me study it and get back with you.
As a further explanation at this time, let me say that half stops are at best a compromise. You're trying to get one lever to do what really should be done on two separate levers for the best results. However, on an Emmons push pull, if you're carefull about what else you put on that lever, you usually can attain the best feeling half stop of any guitar.
Bear in mind, the more "other" changes you put on that lever can adversely affect the feel of the half stop and especially the 2'nd lower on down to C#. With a little careful "planning ahead" you can usually use another change or two to actually help the half stop feel and not adversely affect the rest of the action (feel).
Generally, this needs to be done by someone who has knowledge of these things. It doesn't mean though, that you or anyone else can't "learn" what to do and how to do it. It's not rocket science, it more common sense than anything else.
It is probably best that we converse through Email or telephone for the "how to" of this. It would take up a lot of space here on the forum.

Richard, I do in fact, raise the second on the RKL with the first string raise, which also lowers the 3rd on the C6 to B and it is a long throw on that lever, a lot more than I like. I may have to eliminat that second string pull.
Bobby, you're right, it's decision time and will muse my options, thanks, Gary.

Actuallly, I've lowered 2 (with a half stop)and raised 7 and lowered 9 on both my PP's for several years . . . works fine. I use the mechanical half stop (mostly Emmons) on the 2d string, and just use "shock springs" on the other two to make it relatively smooth.
