Topic: Fiddle tones on pedal steel |

| At the risk of sounding foolish, I would like to know if anybody is creating fiddle tones with their steel. We don't have a fiddle in our band and I would like to try and create the fiddle voice on my steel. I play a GFI with GFI III pickup through a Roland Cube 80xl amp. I use a Teleonics volume pedal. Any suggestions? |

Without a MIDI pickup and a sound module, I would have to say no. Outside of the "strings" effect we get using a fuzz box and tailoring our tone controls (which could never be taken for a fiddle sound), I have never heard one or heard of one.
The E-Bow can get something kind of close, but still not good enough for Orange Blossom Special.

Try letting an open string ring while bending in to a chord. Like the first string F# while playing the D chord on the 5th fret. Bounce on the A pedal and play a Cajun type fiddle lick in that position .
In my experience I had better luck with note choice and phrasing than using electronics for a fiddle emulation.

I've played in a few fiddleless bands that wanted me to take the intro to Amarillo by Morning or the Fireman or you name it.
Rather than trying to sound like a fiddle, I just turn on the chorus effect, and play like a fiddle and sound like a steel

| Also take a look at the POG 2 by Electro Harmonix. I know there is a suggested Cello setting that can be dialed in. I use the POG 2 to emulate a Hammond B3 Organ. Not bad in a combo setting. You may be able to tweak the Cello settings to sound slightly higher in pitch and get a reasonable violin sound. The POG 2 is quite an impressive pedal with a wild tone pallet, but it may take a bit of trial and error. |
