Topic: Replacement P/U for JB Frypan |

I recently bought a guitar with a broken pickup... the Jerry Byrd Frypan guitar. The shipper didn't protect it adequately and the large horseshoe magnets broke the bottom fiberboard (plastic, really). See the pictures here:

I need the resources of the forum for two things:
1.) What should I value this pickup at for insurance purposes? I have to go to the PO later to deal with this.
2.) Are exact replacements available? If not, what would y'all recommend?

"Dad" was my good friend Dave Giegerich ... And that was his ShoBud Frypan.
His widow Pam was painfully selling some of Dave's guitars to help offset their boys with tuitions.
Those pickups were positioned by retaining screws ... But we're secured to the faux horseshoes via epoxy ( that thin yellowish film) .
It was probably like that for years ... Dave never mentioned a problem ... Though we had talked about putting one of my Neodymium units in it.
Send me the mounting plate and the faux horseshoes ... And I'll make a new unit that will blow your socks off ...
Free of charge ... Dave was my buddy, least I can do.
I'll send you my mailing address in a PM.

The problem was that the horseshoes were also secured by tiny phillips-head screws... the magnets took a torque and cracked the plastic. The guitar was not playable when I got it... the horseshoes were hitting the strings... I was able to fiddle with it enough to get sound out of it, but the coil assembly is not stable at all... I'm confident that this happened during the ship.

Pam here. In the throes of moving home to Fredericksburg Va and haven't had internet so just learned of this situation when Rick alerted me. First and foremost my sincerest apologies to the buyer. You are right, we don't know what we are doing and are having to learn under not ideal circumstances. But I promise you we will make it right - to your satisfaction. I can only imagine how disappointing it was to get this cool new guitar and have something wrong with it.

The parts Rick requested have left here USPS Blue for Rick's place... turns out he's not far from one of my favorite museums in the world, Udvar-Hazy.
Pam, I wouldn't worry one whit more... Rick's well-known for creating wonderful pickups and the guitar itself is in good condition... I'm sure that I'm going to be more happy with it now than I would have been if it had arrived perfectly.
And, for general information, shipping any guitar should involve an extra box around the case with foam, peanuts, whatever so that when the gorillas get their turn at it the G forces are reduced.

I always think of Dave as a mischievous 19 year old in a mid 50's body..A great (ie. VERY understanding) wife and two fine kids.
A monster player, much beloved amongst his peers and students and a WICKED sense of humor.

The Aiello Faux Rick pickup arrived today... got it installed and I can't be happier. Thanks Rick, thanks Carter and Pam Giegerich, thanks b0b/Forum.
I've just donated Rick's normal amount for this job ($300) to the Forum. I'll post a clip of the new guitar later.

My wife and I have only personally met Rick one time for a pleasant afternoon at the City Folks Festival in Dayton Ohio.
He was displaying, and he and Bobby Ingano were playing, his all aluminum sand cast Dust Pan steel guitars there that day. He even had one that he had cast from Bronze that Ingano also played.
We were able to watch Rick give a demonstration of his foundry techniques by pouring a molten Aluminum casting. If I remember correctly the temperature of the molten aluminum in his small foundry furnace was around 2,000 degrees.
We have talked many times by e-mail over the last few years. I have always considered him a very good friend.
If you have Rick for a friend, you have a real friend indeed ! |

Dave was one of my best friends, and I took steel lessons from him. I just realized you must have been playing Dave's (now your) guitar yesterday at the Austin Steel Co-op Jam.
I have a Shot Jackson made "Jerry Byrd" fry pan, 8 string.
We'll have to chat next time I make the jam.

Ted... yes, grab me next time, you'll have to compare our guitars, the Aiello Neo p/up really sings.
I'm continually amazed at Dave Giegrich's circle, turns out Rose was a friend of his as well. I'm very proud to own his old guitar... hopefully one day I'll grow into it, very big shoes to fill.
