Please help me out fellow musicians. I am new to pedal steel but play everything else with strings including square neck dobro for about 50 years. I play a carter starter and I am ready to step up because I have become a real steel fan. I am not really concerned about price but I don't really know about needing the c6 neck. I am 57 years old. I am a decent blues guitarist but I really love old classic country. I just learned She Thinks I Still Care. Help me out steelers I am in NC |

Craig I would advise you to go to a steel show (St louis / Dallas /or any other major show you can get to) and try them all out. There are really no bad steels these days and it a matter of personal taste, plus you get to talk to the makers and get advice from all the players. _________________ MSA Millenium SD10, GK MB200, Sica 12inch cab, Joyo American Sound Pedal/ Jay Ganz Straight Ahead amp, Telonics 15inch in Peavey cab, Digitech RP150, Peterson tuner.Hilton volume pedal.Scott Dixon seat and guitar flight case. |

Make it a Mullen and you will be set forever. Will have quite a few in St. Louis if you can come down. I also have a few on the For Sale Section now. R.P. or new Discovery if you like the single body.
Great machines, they will do you no harm. |

I have owned and played 4 different brands, and for Me, the Mullen fits like a glove, and sound like no other. You just can't go wrong with a Mullen _________________ Mullen G2 SD10 3 & 5 The Eagle

I think a Jackson would be good for you-I play a BlackJack Custom-Wonderful sound, tone, playability, and smooth pedal action-the Jackson Steel gives you a classic sound similar to a Sho-Bud. There are so many great steel guitars out there

Craig, check out the Russler. I've had some good guitars and the Russler's the best I've had. Solid pedal and knee lever stops and great tone. I've got a SD10 Birdseye maple and it's not heavy and doesn't walk the floor either. Give Gary Skelton a call.

As you are a new player, your tone will suck for a couple of years no matter what steel you play, so I would suggest a cheap and cheerful modern all-pull steel. There's no point suggesting a particular brand as they are all pretty much interchangeable.
When your pedal steel actually sounds like a pedal steel (and that can take a few years, folks) that's when you will get itchy feet and want to try something else, and that's when you will discover ZB.
It's no good learning on a ZB, as they are nearly always completely out of whack, and the newcomer simply finds the whole thing far to difficult, and gives up.
Once you have learned how to play, you will be able to put up with the idiosyncracies of the ZB |

There are quite a few great used steels in the for sale section. I saw a Zum with 5 knee levers, a couple of Mullens, and a Dekley for only $1,000.
If money is no object, I suggest you get one of the Mullens or the Zum. But if you need to be conservative with your money, you should get the Dekley. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Craig...Regardless of which brand of steel guitar you choose, you will most likely (if you are at all like the majority of us) eventually own at one time or another, nearly every major brand available. Very few remain with one guitar for their entire playing career. |
