AJ "Wunder" Ghent will be in San Francisco Sunday.

Post by Jon Sawyer »

Just a heads up here that AJ "Wunder Ghent", son of Aubrey, will be in San Francisco this Sunday, @ Brick & Mortar, with the one and only Col. Bruce Hampton (a very rare west coast appearance).

The full lineup is:
Col. Bruce on guitar and vocals
Chris Cawthray on drums
Jez Graham on keyboards (playing left-hand bass)
AJ Ghent on lap steel guitar

They will also be playing a daytime set on Saturday up in the Gold Country Foothills. Kimock will be there too; I'm hoping for maybe some sort of Kimock Ghent jam, but not counting on it.

Below is a video of AJ & this band (w/different drummer).

That was cool. I saw AJ play when he was a kid back in 2003 or so.

Any idea of the tuning he's using?

I found more :D

The whole broadcast, a very entertaining 19 minute interview with Colonel Bruce, followed by 21 minutes of live music. The youtube video was a clip from this:

I have no idea what tuning AJ uses, but I will ask him this weekend; and I'll try to get some nice detailed photographs of his guitar and rig. I'm also pretty sure all the sets will be recorded. I intend to record on Sunday night, although I'll just be using my little Edirol R9 with the external mic's; it's results can be hit or miss.

Cheers, Jon

P.S. Please note: I initially posted they would be in San Francisco on Friday, when in fact it is Sunday! Sorry about that.

I had read somewhere where he said he used variations on open D,but I would love to know the string by string tuning used in that clip, lucky boy growing up amongst players like Calvin Cooke and having Aubrey as his father.

Yes, AJ uses D7 tuning, as he put it: "Old school Sacred Steel E7, tuned down 1 step..."

:-)

Later, Jon
