Hi Guys,

I am from Pretoria South Africa, population 500 000.
Was born and raised on the most beautiful riverfarm in die Orange Free State province, more than 100 miles from the nearest big town.
My mother played piano and father a banjo.
I saw and heard a pedal steel on Hee Haw and Dallas and that converted me instantly.

I know only two other pedal steel players and have written to three others.
Pedal steel and mandolin have to compete here with concertinas and keyboards for a musical niche.
Most musicians have never heard or seen a pedal steel before.
So the promotion work goes on.

I learnt so much from the Steel Forum, it is like a complete personal lesson a day.

Steel on, you blokes.

Raised in DC, Hartford, New Hampshire, Honolulu, San Diego (yep, a Navy brat). Then lived and worked out of LA for 13 years. Then out of Houston, Albuquerque, Missoula (4 years), Tucson, Hartford, and Nashville (3 years).

At age 45, I returned to school for a Master's, then worked in Indonesia, Kuwait, Poland, and UAE. Took my steel to UAE.

In 2002, my life raft washed up on the shores of Rhode Island, I crawled out, found a job teaching . . . and have been living here in Providence ever since.

I have played in 46 states and about 20 foreign countries.

altho' for the last many years I've lived in the greater Portland Metro area of Oregon........which is situated here on the left coast, the region seldom touched upon by Good Morning America's weather professionals.

Dunlap, IL, 15 mi north of Peoria, a town that props two cornfields apart in central IL. Lived all over the place as a kid. Started playing pedal steel in LA, then Eugene, OR and now Seattle. I started playing Hawaiian steel 10 years ago and make a pilgrimage to Hawaii twice a year. Love both pedal and no-pedal steel.

I've always been a South Carolina guy-I lived in Greenville from 1981 til about 1992, when I moved to Greer, and I'm now livin' in a little town called Pickens, South Carolina. I'm friends with several musicians around here. Several South Carolina steel players are friends of mine. I keep the pedal steel alive and well in Pickens-members of my church had once never seen or heard a pedal steel guitar until I played in church. After I played steel in church, everybody there was amazed because they now love the sound of the pedal steel guitar.

Hello everyone,
I am from the Far East, Singapore.
There are only an estimated handful of steel players here. Most of the experienced and professional ones have gone home.They were on lap steels making Hawaiian music.I am very new to the pedal steel and taking baby steps. I still have a long road ahead.
I got myself a Fessenden S10 in Mar 2012 to learn.

Born in '46 (I'm among the first baby boomers)in Kearny (pronounced "carney", New Jersey. To the east looms the Manhattan sky line--I watched the Twin Towers go up from the East-facing windows of my high school. To see them come down was extra sad.
From Kearny to the U.S.Army in '65, (Vietnam), then to Klamath Falls, Oregon and Lake Tahoe, CA, then to Eastern Long Island for about 35 years, then to Wolfeboro, NH where I now reside and play my Derby with the "New England Country Boys

Hey Ray, have you read Dana Jennings bok "Sing Me Back Home"? He writes about growing up hard in the deep woods of New Hampshire and the cultural associations of his kin and town with country music. A good fun, sometimes harrowing, read about the America many people try to forget. The burnt nerve endings of our core culture.

I have heard of the book, Dan, but I haven't read it. It's true--the country roots are deep in rural NH. I've been to back porch and kitchen jam sessions, not to mention the one they have every Tuesday night in an old church a few miles up the road. We played at a redneck wedding recently where the bride and groom arrived to the reception on a farm tractor. The groom, about in his late 20s, kept asking for Hank Williams stuff. It's a far cry from NJ and NY where all they seem to want is blues and rock.

Born in Hickman Ky 70 yrs ago and have lived in Flint Mi,Clio Mi,Ozark Mo for 2yrs and now I live in Flushing Michigan and retired from GM after 40 yrs and played in clubs for 35 yrs. Still play every day with sound tracks or just what comes to mind. Love Steel and have since I first heard one on a Web Pierce tune.Sorry for going on and on here.Ron
