Save the Last dance for Me Buck Owens, with Mooney

Post by Billy Murdoch »

The steel solo sounds so uncomplicated but the execution is absolutely perfect.

That steel player could be Jay McDonald. Jay was on some of Buck's first recordings and sounded just like our beloved Ralph.

That album was my introduction to Buck Owens and the Buckaroos. Got it unopened for $3 at a second hand store. It's about worn now.
You know ladies and gentlemen, something tells me that is Jay McDonald playing. Similar things going n there, but on up tempo tunes, Moon seemed to push the beat a little, where this cut seems just a little laid back, like just a hair. Either way, a fantastic cut on a great great record.

I think your right. Listening to the track this afternoon, there's a couple things that are very much R.Mooney, and McDonald had another thing going on with single notes. The arrangement on this song is really great.

That was the very first Buck Owens album I bought when I was 20 years old (1997). That single CD purchase at Wal-Mart in Cullman, Alabama changed the rest of my life. I will never be the same again after hearing Ralph Mooney's pedal steel. This song was one of my favorites on the entire album, but the entire album is fantastic! :)

I'll never forget how I felt when I heard the very first track on that CD, "My Heart Skips A Beat" with the Telecasters and Buck and Don's harmony! I felt like I had been searching for that sound...

Then, I heard "Close Up The Honky Tonks" and it sounded so good that I wanted to scream out loud! About 1 minute into "Close Up The Honky Tonks" the very first time I ever listened to it, I said "Country music doesn't suck! Just the new country music sucks!"

I think there were 3 different steel players on that album... Jay McDonald, Ralph Mooney, and JayDee Maness... I'll have to dig out the liner notes and post the details here.

FYI, I used to study those liner notes while I was listening to those Buck Owens CD's when I was in college. I majored in Mechanical Engineering but minored in Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.

That is a completely different recording. The vocal is completely different, too. I think that was recorded several years after the original recording, with Brumley playing steel on this newer version.

I should know, I have memorized the original recording.

Billy, that second recording is in a lower key, probably done years later on as with most vocalist, as they age, they drop the keys to the original recording.
The first one I recon is 100% Mooney....the second is "Very" Mooney..ish...but I don't think it's him.

Guess it was people like Buck and Merle who got us to part with our dosh to buy steel guitars :)

It looks like you're having the same problem I had, Micky.

The browser tells you there is an error when you try to post the reply so you hit the back button and try to post it again. Correct?
