Have Steel Will Work

Post by Johnny Cox »

I have found myself without a fulltime gig. My job with Jody Nix came to a sudden stop. He suddenly decided that I wasn't the right fit for his band. Not a problem, now I am available to play clubs, shows, theaters, fairs, sessions, T.V. shows, first communions, weddings and garage door openings. Local, long distance, pedal steel, non-pedal steel or bass. P.M. me for further contact info.

Johnny, sorry about the gig being lost. I know a guy based in the Houston area that's looking for a steel player. Just cut a CD with him with all the Houston "A" sessions guys.. He sings good, but not strictly traditional country, although not "pop" country or red dirt....more like 1980's "Haggard/Waylonish" influence and a few shuffles thrown in for live gigs.

I don't know about the pay, but he is working quite a bit - if you want his info. you know how to contact me. I'll be glad to fwd. you his contact #.

Hope this helps, my friend. Jody

PS - I'm leaving tomorrow - won't be back til Monday, you can call my cell Fri. or Sat. I'll be driving.

WOW! You know the steel guitar job market is in the toilet when someone like you is out of work. Hard to believe he just now decided you were not the right fit for his band. If I remember right, isn't this your second round with him? Unless he totally shifted gears, I can't see how you could have been with him that long if you "didn't fit". You don't deserve to be out of work, and the world shouldn't be deprived of your outstanding playing. Good luck.

I sure wished I lived in Texas, as I am sure working with you would be as rewarding as working with Big Dave Owens. No smoke, just fact I really like what you play and the way you play it. When someone with your skills is out of a playing gig then I wonder who can find a gig. It's guys like you and Leon Rhoades that keep me buying lottery tickets just hoping I can pick the right 6 numbers so I can hire a great band. I would have a show every Saturday night completely free to the public and promote traditional country music and western swing. Put all the band members on $75k a year salary, insurance, and retirement plan and make them record twice a week and rehearse twice a week. Cater all 5 events and make sure they were treated with respect by all in attendance. I bet I could get some great players who'd enjoy what they were doing. I'll just keep buying my lottery ticket every Saturday.
