6th string lower full tone.

Post by richard burton »

I am contemplating removing the 6th string full tone lower, on RKL, (E9 tuning), as it is problematic on one of my steels. Comments and views, opinions etc as to the wisdom of this proposed move, and any ideas for using RKL welcomed. I am thinking of raising string 7 a full tone on this lever, but it would be better to have a few opinions first.
Thanks, Richard.

Lowering your 6th string G# -> F# is easy with a plain string. However, with a wound string it is difficult or impossible on some steels.

Paul Franklin raises his 7th a full tone, instead of the more traditional full tone 6th string lower. Although, he has that full tone lower in his 4th pedal setup (lowering 5, 6 & 10 a full tone). Also, he drops 6, two full tones...

I've stuck with dropping 6 (plain .022) a full tone on RKL (that also raises 1 a full tone, and 2 a half-tone). See... See... I don't try to copy EVERYTHING that Paul does.

Hello, Richard, I sure like lowering the 6th string on songs like Crazy Arms and many fills and intros. Course, I'm pretty much a boll weavel on the steel. Regards, Earl

This pedal (though I don't have it) gives you a very popular, and neat lick! Raising the 7th will give you the note, but not the "moving harmonies" that are the appeal of this pedal.

Also, go up a couple of thou on your string guage (to at least a .024), and that "problem" you have may disappear! Image
