Blue Lacquer Mullen

Post by Steve Stallings »

I seem to recall that Larry Sasser and possibly Jimmy Day played blue lacquer Mullen guitars at one point. I know that Jimmy had a Sho Bud, but I seem to recall a Mullen. Is my memory correct? Does anyone know if the guitars had wood necks or aluminum? I'm just curious because of my recent purchase of one of these.

Yep, you're right. See http://b0b.com/infoedu/west95/wcsg7.htm - that's his guitar.

Both had aluminum necks, as I recall.

Jimmy had two blue lacquer Mullen guitars. David Zettner is in possession of one, and Marilyn Day has the other. These are treasured pieces of steel guitar history, IMHO.

Bud Vanderberg sent me a picture of one of Jimmy's blue Mullen. It does have aluminum necks, but other than that appears identical to mine. I'm really excited about getting this. It actually hasn't been shipped to me yet because I told Larry to wait for my check to clear so he wouldn't have to worry.

Well.... I've been following the progress of this steel as it comes across the country to Texas. It was shipped on Friday and came in and out of Jackson, Ms at 4:00am this morning. I reckon it will be in the Sweetwater/Houston hub by noon. Tomorrow morning it should say "out for delivery"....

yee-haw!

Hi Steve---I know you are anxious to get that Mullen and believe me you will not be dissappointed in it. It will be everything Larry said it would be and even more. You'll see. Image

Larry is a good friend of mine and I have never known him to do wrong by anybody. Take good care of that Mullen and it will take good care of you. Image

It is 8pm and I just got to play "The Blue Angel" for the first time. This is a stunningly beautiful guitar. The web pics Larry Keyt posted don't begin to do it justice. The Maple is a "tiger striped/flamed" blue lacquer that is awesome. Flawless..... what an unbelievable guitar. The workmanship and fit is second to none. It is so easy to play that it's like it has power steering.

How does she sound? Larry, Larry, Larry! How could you possibly part with this guitar? (Thank you Image) She sounds like an angel..... hence "The Blue Angel". It is different than any of my Emmons or the Remington that I just picked up. In my mind, she sounds an awful lot like my old Shobud Super-Pro II. A very rich and vibrant timbre.....

BTW...this guitar arrived just as Larry stated.... with the Day set up. Every E9 pedal and knee except for the B pedal and the knee dropping the second string has to be changed. I swapped the A and C pedals around but then ran out of patience wanting to play her! Also he used a G on the top of the C6 and I use a D... Guess I'll go finish doing all this stuff..

Steve
The guitars of Larry Sassor and Jimmy Day both had aluminum necks.

Del,
This guitar is truly a work of art. It's so pretty I'm about half afraid to take it on the job Image

Steve.. I too own a blue Mullen and I am still as happy with it as you are of your new one. Mine has aluminum necks and sounds like the blue angel she really is. I have had many mnay people want to buy her but she's just not for sell. Now play yours well and put your heart into her and she will respond in kind.
