Let me see if I can explain this. I have many audio and video files that I store on my desktop computer. I also transfer them to a thumb drive to use on my laptop and to an external hard drive for backup. When I add files, say 20 of them, unless I manually copy the files individually to the thumb drive and external hard drive, then I end up using Windows Explorer and just copy the folder over. The hierarchy of the folders is:
1. top folder
2. Artist name folder
3. Individual album folders.

So, when I copy over the top folder, it wants to copy all 14 or gigabytes of files. Of course I get the message that there is already a file with that name and have to say yes or no to the copy operation. If I say yes, I have hours of copying to look forward to.

My first question: Using Explorer, if I was to say "no to all" to the overwriting files, would it still copy all files that were not pre-existing on the target drives or that have been modified ?

Second: If Explorer won't work, is there some software (hopefully freeware) that will allow me to specify the top folder and have it copy over only files in the subfolders that were not on the target drives or have been updated since the file on the target drive was created/modified?

The whole motivation here is the time it takes to copy ALL my audio and video files (several hours).

I downloaded a free program called SyncBack that does those things nicely.

Richard;
Check the thumbdrive itself for syncing software that may be preinstalled on it.

You can also use the free Microsoft Sync Toy to do these jobs.
