I didn't see a mid shift knob on there - how do you dial in your tone just right? Is the mid control well placed (do you know what frequency)?

The 80XL is not heavy on the mid range as are many Peavey amps. I'm not sure what mid range frequencies are affected by the mid knob, but I can say that you will not spend ages trying to dial out mid range honk - it isn't there.

I have 7 Peavey amps and they all suffer from extreme mid range bias. That's why they include a paramid eq section on many of their solid state steel amps. I prefer amps that just have straight forward bass, middle and treble with an inherent scooped mid range, as per Fender, Webb, Peavey valve amps etc.

Hey Micky B. thanks for the heads up on the Roland Cube 80XL amp. I see it also has delay built right in the amp. Does the amp have a digital or spring reverb and how do you like the amp reverb?..just by your description it seems to me that this amp would also eliminate the need for the Boss type pedals (reverb and Delay units)...that would also be a big plus...we could go back to the steel, amp and volume pedal and get the job done..plus the lighter weight..sounds like a real winner....Micky B..now you are making me spend money..LOL.

You get the picture...sliced bread etc. There are both spring and plate verb settings along with tap tempo delay and looper capabilities. Since Roland makes Boss I'd assume the effects are at least as good as the pedals. I have the 40XL and am very pleased.

Yes I did a little checking yesterday and the best price for the Roland Cube 80XL I found was from "American Musical Supply" for $360...they let you break in up in 3 payments over 3 months for no extra interest charge if you so desire. The shipping is free and no state taxes involved. If anyone knows of a better price, please let me know..TIA.

MF shows several used 80XL's starting at $303.20
Might be worth calling on these...

If you want to stay with a new one, most of the big box stores will "price match"...so you could use American's price to get it somwhere else that might be more convenient.

I got mine from AMS & it was $379.00,I have since sold it,I'm quitting the business.Also sold my Vegas 400.

Got my guitar to sell when I make up my mind what to ask.None have come up in the classifieds so I can't compare.BSG 3X5 SD-10.

Chas J Wagner, thanks for the info but I think I'll buy new because the difference is not that much and buying used, especially in electronic equipment, you always take a chance of getting something that is not 100%, especially if you buy it sight unseen. The cost of gettin it back to 100% is usually more than the price difference between the new and used price, plus the hassle. American Musical Supply will let you make three monthly payments of $120 with no interest or taxes added..not a bad deal.

Brad...the effects..spring and plate are really that good. The delay is great...there is a "tap" button to set you delay tempo. You can get a good almost "slap back" delay...that, with the plate reverb is all you need. When you turn off the amp, and back on later..you have to press the tap delay button again. There is a good manual that comes with it. I just use the J C clean channel, and like my friend Ken Byng mentioned, it's so much easier to dial in a tone with just Volume .. middle ..treble.. Presence and bass. You have to actually dial out the high frequencies on this amp...it's that clear. Plus when you're actually playing, It's hard to imagine it's a 12 inch your using....Crystal clear at all settings. Little things come in small packages as they say

I know of at least 3 people who have sold their Brand X amp after buying an 80XL. I am going with another friend next Friday to a retailer for him to have a look at the 80XL after me telling him about it. He is a guitar player.

I was thinking initially about putting a 12" Black Widow in my Cube, but I don't think it would make any improvement on the stock Roland speaker.

...Brain transplant next then. Actually getting back to the topic...had a text from my pal who tried my Cube. Guess what he bought today

Something that weighs 36 pounds. Hey don't put a Black widow in...you never know that great speaker in there "may" have a Neo?? that's why it's light. I wont risk taking it out to investigate. I did undo the front grill and it's not a paper cone. Some strong material though...perhaps Kevlar?? ... They have that Neo material in abundance in the far east.

Brad...I happened to have a Boss pedal to switch on effects, so no...I didn't buy one, but if you're going to use the effects, you'd need one. The Manual will explain between the latching and non latching pedals.

As Ken B said...you guys really don't get ripped off like we do. Over here it is About £299 pounds, but I got mine for less because a friend who get's all his stuff (And I mean expensive stuff)..introduced me to the manager of the shop. Sometimes it's whom you know that counts

I tried out a ZT club amp and sent it back because the pickup I was using was to hot for the input stage of the amp, distorted so bad I couldn't use it with any volume, so I was wondering if any of you that are using the roland have a hot pickup in your guitar like BL 710 or such, I have a telonics 206 in mine which is a purty hot PU and was concerned about over driving the 80 xl, couldn't find any specs on the amp to see what the input was rated at

Hey Micky and Ken, Fed X delivered my Roland Cube 80 XL amp today...it arrived in perfect condition..I cannot believe the sound/tone from it. The speaker carries all the chords and notes nice and clean. I only had about 20 minutes to spend with it..played a few songs on the JC clean setting/channel. I like the plate reverb..did not get a chance to mess with the delay setting...Mickey..if you have a little time, post your amp settings..and again, thank you very much for letting me know about this Amp...IMHO this amp is all one needs for small clubs and home practice..which probably covers 80% of what most of us part time players do.
