Thanks CrowBear, it's a fun band to play with.... but the steel is really doing an ambient background thing to let the harp and vocals stand out. I do go out and play the occasional country gig where I get to let it rip. :D

I really like this instrumental Johan. Iwas in Greece once in the late seventies. A perfect soundtrack for my memory :o

Thanks Daniel,

I'm the producer on this project. I'm working on the last several mixes as we speak.... hope to release early March.

BTW I'm married to the harpist.... so I get to carry that too. :D

I heard ol Buzz had passed. It broke my heart. We became good friends when I lived in Vegas and his band took our spot at the Sillver Dollar. Our band moved on to the strip. He had a super sense of humor. He had funny stories. A super picker on steel and geetar. A great guy! I miss ol Dick Miller too. I met him and Terry there too. To get me nerves, Terry Bethal and Dick would come out to see me. They would cross their arms and legs and sit and stare at me while I was a pickin. No movement even if I hit a million dollars lick. Just stare. But it was in fun. I learned.

That was some fantastic stuff Daniel. Very cool tones you got. What kind of modulation are you using? I've always had troubles with modulation and steel.

And so as not to bump this up without adding. Has anyone posted the ACL with Van Morrison. There is some interesting steel there.

Thanks, Justin. I have all my gear listed in my signature - for chorus effect, I use the Fromel Seraph:
http://fromelelectronics.com/pedals/Seraph
It's modeled after a Boss pedal (CE1 or something like that). I often use the Seraph in combination with overdrive or delay (mostly Superdelay or Echolution - I'm still learning the TimeLine).

BJ Cole with BENT (he's on their albums THE EVERLASTING BLINK and ARIELS):

Now that this short piece is on my band's myspace page, I wanted to post a link here:

I triple-tracked the underscore - no other instruments - and came up with the whale cries at the end.

Well we made the recording session today. It turned out to be a cluster "f".We loaded in at 9AM but the studio had up graded Computer soft ware and our sound engineer didn't know how to run it.So after 100 phone calls and the computer guy showing up,we got started at 2pm.I think we finally got some good tracks but we were burned out by then. Its a well known studio and sheet happens and I will post what we did as soon as we get the mix back.Elbo

This is a Contemporary Christian artist that I produced in my studio
( http://studio84.com ) Its my attempt to blend Pedal Steel with this kind of music, we also produced the video. The song was #1 on the Contemporary Christian charts for several weeks and is up for song of the year...

So my new band finally recorded some decent practice demos. We have plans to tighten things up and do a proper recording but here it is.

I've played in many bands but this is the first one I really feel that "thing" that makes you want to play music. I've never heard my songs interpreted as closely as I hear them in my head as with my bandmate. Hope you like.

Elton, I'm sure it can't be that bad.

I came across a few more examples this past week as I was listening to my vinyl collection.

The Shins: Gone For Good

Stereolab: Captain Easychord
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ9z0Puurgk (I really love the delay on the steel in this one)

Okkervil River: Kansas City

Kraftwerk: Ananas Symphonie (Lap steel probably instead of Pedal, but still.)

Nice work with your band, Justin. And those are some really swell links. Although many alternative type bands seem to include steel/pedal steel on songs that are country-ish, the track by Kraftwerk knocked me out!

I hope this band hasn't already been included (we're nearing 10 pages!)- Last Town Chorus, Megan Hickey on lap steel:

No, it's NOT the Grateful Dead, it's Jerry Garcia from his solo album GARCIA. A tribute to pipe organist, E. Power Biggs:

There's been some discussion in another thread about the Gary Newcomb Trio and these videos:

The Wild Ones
Dark Hollow
Where Are You Going?

I am mesmerised. It's great to see someone using pedal steel as the main accompaniment for a vocal.

This led me to delve deeper and I discovered the Lazaroff Brothers' second album called America Artifacts, which has some interesting steel playing, presumably by Gary. There are three tracks available to stream on Gary's own site. The track called For The Birds is brilliant and features some fantastic steel playing to rival lead guitar in its level of excitement and acrobatics :o

I'm told he's playing a 12-string with a B6 tuning, but others may want to chip in with more on that.

I find this music really inspiring as it features steel guitar at the forefront of contemporary music without relying too much on ambients and "sonic colour." Great stuff.

OK, so we have the "steel guitar" of India on here.
How's about lap steel of Viet Nam?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsb0ngBI ... re=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOJuN28S ... re=related

It's so easy, a kid could do it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kChsmBB8 ... re=related

The playing might not always synch with the visual, but the music is still fascinating:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJCOdT8T ... re=related

Can't seem to find an actual video performance, but Kim Sinh had a CD out years ago, playing "guitar hawaii":

Daniel, Those were really awesome links. I wish I understood more about that area of the worlds scales and musical ideas, it sounds so awesome, but so foreign for me. GUess it might be time to start doing some research.

Eric Tingstad recently posted this on the forum and I thought it would be wise to post it here for posterity sake. It's really cool ambient steel guitar.
