Y'all,

I just purchased a 74 MSA Classic D-10 (modified to an S-D) from Lane Gray here on the forum... Great guy and he worked his butt off to get it ready for me - what a great guy to deal with!

The question is this:

I am about to venture into the realm of pedals (hushed silence). I am going to buy a Goodrich L120 and am looking for a few extra things. I am considering buying a matchbox 7A or hilton digital sustain to go with it. I have also considered buying the Steel Driver III instead because I need some distortion and don't want to buy lots of additional pedals and what not. What do suggest for me to do?

Thanks for your help!

Nathan

Hi Nathan, If it were me. I would just buy a Hilton pedal
and a good FX unit for Delay and Reverb. It's all you need.
There are many good FX units availabe like the Boss RV-3
and depending what amp you use, there's many rack units.

For a Fuzzbox, I kinda like the Boss Tone. I think Bobbe is selling a new version.
My Boss Tone is at the doctor, a friend gave me a Danelectro FAT metal. After some fiddling with the knobs, I found a creamy distortion, with loads of sustain and not a lot of feedback, unless you sit right in front of the speaker.
If you're trying for a Robert Randolph kinda tone, his Fuzzbox is a boutique clone of a Tube Screamer (I forget the brand, but I can't see $200 for a fuzz).
Enjoy the guitar, I had fun working on it.

Nathan, a good pedal for reverb, delay, distortion and a boat load of other effects is the DigiTech RP155. It won't break the bank, either.

I agree on the RP155. Although, if I could afford it, I would probably be checking out the big money boutique pedals I read about here. I have to think they would be a lot better than these all-in-one pedals. But, I really do like the RP155. Plus if you can't find a drummer for a gig, you can use the drum machine feature and get through a gig. Had to do that once, and will have to do it again next week. Of course, I have to give up using it for effects on those gigs.

If I use the RP155, would it be best to run the guitar through a matchbox first, or would the RP155 take care of all of it?

Unless you're an accomplished player, forget the Matchboxes, Steeldrivers, or any other "sustainer" devices. EFX that might be of use for any player include an echo/delay device, a chorus, a fuzz, and a phaser.

The POG sounds like a neat thing, and will probably be my next purchase, although I don't really care for the "organy" sounds everyone seems gaga over.

I have a bit of a bias against multi effects units. My few experiences have involved frustration in having to create patches, remembering where they are, and not being able to tweak parameters easily.
Bah. Give me a coupla stomps.
I also don't think steel needs much: reverb is a must; distortion from time to time, and I like phase shifter (hey, I started in '80, in the middle of that period when Buddy never turned his off), especially on the blues.

You can check my signature for effects pedals I use and like.
For distortion/OD/fuzz, you might want to decide which is best for your application. I have the Empress Multidrive, which I haven't fully explored, but it has a great range of options in one unit. If you want a dedicated overdrive, the Sarno Earth Drive is nice.
The Earth Drive is designed for steel; I really like the ZVex Fuzz Factory, and the Caroline Guitar Co. Wave Cannon is very good as well.
I had a Steel Driver III, but felt it colored my tone. I had a Boss Tone long ago, and found it thin and difficult to dial in. You may find a newer version or a Hil-Tone to your liking.
I love delays, but found analogue versions didn't work too well for me. Others love them, but of course, steel guitar is NOT standard guitar and you have to try out effects.
All of the pedals I have listed work well with pedal steel, but you may want to look at what it is you're after. (You can PM/e-mail me if you'd like more details).
